| We Can Learn Some Important Life Lessons From Cats Posted: 02 Mar 2016 05:00 AM PST Humans may worship cats nowadays like they're little furry gods but cats haven't always had it that easy. Sure the Ancient Romans, Greeks, Persians and Egyptians saw them as gods too, and a few other cultures have revered the almighty cat for their feline virtues. But while they were singing the cats praises everyone else was swinging them around by the tail and tossing them, so cats had to become even craftier to stay alive on the streets. They learned a trick or two about survival, defense and the art of keeping cool in a hair raising situations. People can learn a lot of important life lessons from cats, lessons that will change the way we look at the world. A cat knows just how to kiss up to someone who cooks, ensuring their belly is full by keeping the suppliers of food happy. And when necessary cats know how to defuse a violent situation by kissing up once again. In fact, kissing up is one of the best ways to get by in life. But when the claws need to come out, and hissing gives way to some good old fashioned scrapping, it's important to know how to fight. Try to be graceful when you strike, and dodge as many blows as you can by staying light on your feet. And if you find yourself faced with overwhelming odds do the right thing and run for it! The flipside of war is love, and cats have proven themselves to be masters of seduction. They know how to rub people the right way. Their powers of seduction are so strong they can convince a natural enemy to become their friend. And when they're feeling especially charming they can even convince their prey to give them a kiss. Cats are truly the ultimate lovers, and the ultimate fighters, but what's the payoff after all that frisking and fighting? A hearty meal, that's what, and despite what the hawks and doves say food is the most important part of a good life. But cats are no mere foodies, they're the connoisseurs of the animal kingdom And they're also sparkling dinner conversationalists For those of you keeping score we've learned life lessons about fighting, frisking and fooding from cats, so what else is there? Oh yeah, spend five or more hours a day preening yourself And make sure you're always stylishly dressed so you stand out in a crowd And when in doubt howl at the top of your lungs, that's sure to get you all the attention you need! You can learn a lot from a cat, although it turns out very little of it is actually relevant to humans...my bad! | ||||||||
| The 10 Strangest Mass Hysterias Posted: 02 Mar 2016 04:00 AM PST
Even if mental illness isn’t contagious, sometimes the symptoms are, as people start to believe that something is happening to them because it is happening to others. Throughout history, we find accounts of bizarre beliefs or behavior that grew out of hand when more and more people joined in. Sometimes the “epidemic” would spread from town to town, or even through mass media. Such was the case for the Meowing Nuns.
Mass hysterias are not limited to isolated groups, though, or even people under stress. And it can happen anywhere, at any time. The newest of the ten cases at How Stuff Works is from 2006! And it probably won’t be the last.
| Posted: 02 Mar 2016 03:00 AM PST Boba had been edged out of the bounty hunting game by droids and genetically enhanced clones who just made that old Mandalorian look bad, so he started searching for other outlets. Fishing in the Sarlacc pit proved to be no fun, and he'd never realized how stinky Max Grebo and his band were until he sat in with them on Star Sax, but then he discovered the joys of aerosol art. Soon Fett was tagging the town red, writing "Boba Lives!" and "The Hutt Is A Butt" all over town, that is until he met an old master of the Force who showed him how to paint murals worthy of the Fett name... | Chicago Rat Insists on Entering Storefront, in Spite of What They Want Posted: 02 Mar 2016 02:00 AM PST It wasn't so long ago that we featured the amusing antics of Pizza Rat, a New York City rat who scored a tasty slice and was dragging it to his rat lair in order to feast. That is, he was dragging the tasty treat until someone walked by, which caused him to take cover until danger passed. | ||||||||
| Old Bathtubs Turned into Fabulous Chairs and Couches Posted: 02 Mar 2016 01:00 AM PST Helen Stephenson is an artist in Edinburgh. One day, while walking from her apartment to her studio, she saw 2 old bathtubs dumped on the street for disposal. She realized that they could be cut and made into chairs. After all, they're already made to fit the shape of the human body. Stephenson used an angle grinder to trim the sharp edges, then decorated them with tiles to add color and flair. Some are especially vibrant: -via Recyclart | ||||||||
| Couple Buys A Hoarder's House And Turns It Into Their Dream Home Posted: 02 Mar 2016 12:00 AM PST When people hunt down a great new home to call their own they usually just have to do some straightforward renovations and repairs to make it livable, turning it into the But where does a new homeowner begin when they're renovating a hoarder's house? Sue and John Fogwell knew they'd have their work cut out for them when they bought an old ivy covered house in Philadelphia's Main Line neighborhood, since the hoarder owner had left all of his stuff behind when he moved out four years earlier.
Luckily, the man wasn't a heap of trash kind of hoarder, but the man's "collection" was so massive it couldn't be contained inside the house:
It took them nine months to clean out the house, but here's the kicker- the owner who had amassed the hoard had to watch over the entire process, making the clutter the least of their problems. Read more from We Bought (And Cleaned Out) A Hoarder's House here
| Posted: 01 Mar 2016 11:00 PM PST Cats are naturally tidy. They know that if they need to cough up something, such as a hairball or a dead bird, then they need to dispose of it properly in your sneakers. Dogs, in contrast, will just barf anywhere. | ||||||||
| Posted: 01 Mar 2016 10:00 PM PST The Slow Mo Guys (previously) show us what a dry ice bomb looks as if goes off. They don’t explain, but a dry ice bomb is what happens when you combine dry ice (solid carbon dioxide) with water in an enclosed container -in this case, a plastic bottle. They do the experiment several times, each time trying to get a bigger explosion. Each is interesting, but if you want to skip to the biggest one, it’s at 5:30. -via Tastefully Offensive | ||||||||
| Director Zach Snyder Wants to Make a 300-Style Movie about George Washington Posted: 01 Mar 2016 09:00 PM PST
History teaches us that Washington once threw a knife into Heaven and could kill with a stare (NSFW). He was the superhero of the American Revolutionary War. Naturally, these facts inspire Zach Snyder, the director of the movie Batman v. Superman. He'd like to make a biographical movie about George Washington in the style of 300, the story of the Spartans at Thermoplyae and one of the great movies of all time. Bloomberg Business has the scoop:
It was actually the Hessians at Trenton. But Snyder can later make a sequel about how Washington outsmarted Cornwallis during the Princeton campaign a week later. Spoiler: it involved riger tigers. -via io9

| Supercut Of Actor Playing Every Ethnicity Hollywood Has Asked Him To Play Posted: 01 Mar 2016 07:00 PM PST Hollywood has a tradition of casting white actors to play nonwhite roles, commonly referred to as "whitewashing", and despite the backlash they receive every time they "whitewash" a role movie studios keep racially miscasting roles. But maybe they should call it "racewashing" since Hollywood filmmakers also like to cast ethnic people as different races, and actors who are trying to make it big in the biz need to be prepared to play anyone from anywhere. In the video below actor Cliff Curtis proves he's prepared to play any ethnicity Hollywood throws his way. And despite the fact that he's from New Zealand and of Maori descent he's been asked to play practically every race in the book during his illustrious career as a supporting actor. Slate's June Thomas sat down with Cliff Curtis to discuss Hollywood's racial casting craziness, asking Cliff What It's Like To Play Every Ethnicity Hollywood Throws Your Way, from which one bit of wisdom really stood out:

You can grind up cricket bodies and turn them into flour. You can then use this flour to make pasta. That's how you end up with this delicious-looking radiatori. It's high in protein that the human body can easily digest. The Independent describes how one artisanal pasta shop in Thiefosse, France is using cricket flour to revive its business:
If you want to buy some cricket pasta for yourself, the online store Bugsolutely appears to have you covered. Of course, if you're more sporting, you'd try to catch the crickets yourself. -via Nerdcore
| The Simpsons Nightmare - I Don't Think We're In Springfield Anymore Posted: 01 Mar 2016 05:00 PM PST The Simpsons Nightmare by Riverart They're everybody's favorite misshapen and madcap family, and now they're making the leap from mustard yellow to shades of gray in a new film directed by Tim Burt....wait, isn't that overkill? Seriously, does Lisa need to be more brooding, or Bart more wicked and wily? Springfield can be a pretty dark place so there probably wouldn't be many changes made there, but won't viewers fear for poor Homer and Marge as they fend off all sorts of nefarious fiends with only young Maggie to protect them? Okay, maybe this isn't such a bad idea after all... | Posted: 01 Mar 2016 05:00 PM PST With this price structure, the choice is yours. You can try to “stick it to the man” and get the most expensive food items for your dollar. Or you can enjoy a nice salad. There was one particular breakfast buffet where other people loaded up on bacon and sausage, while I mostly concentrated on biscuits and gravy and hash brown potatoes. Why? Because those were things that I enjoyed, but didn’t have time to make at home. It might not have been the most bang for the buck, but it was a treat for me. I don’t do buffets anymore, but the metaphor stands. Getting what makes you happy is more important than getting more than someone else. | 90-Year Old Woman Gets Cancer, Takes the Ultimate Road Trip Instead of Treatments Posted: 01 Mar 2016 04:44 PM PST When she was 90 years old, Norma's husband died. Then she was diagnosed with cancer. The doctors recommended a regimen of surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation to treat it. Norma had a better idea:
Since then, she's been driving across the United States, seeing everything that she always wanted to see. Her son and daughter-in-law have been taking her on the journey and documenting it on their Facebook page Driving Miss Norma. Last August, Norma sold her home and bought a 36-foot long motorhome for the trip. Norma has since seen many natural wonders, including Yellowstone National Park and the Grand Canyon. She's been to the National World War II Museum, which is fitting, as she served in the Navy during that war. She's even ridden in a hot air balloon. You can read more about Norma's extraordinary ongoing journey at the Today show. -via 22 Words
| Conan The Clueless Gamer And PewDiePie Play Far Cry Primal Posted: 01 Mar 2016 04:00 PM PST Bombing doesn't have to take place on stage during a live comedy show, it can happen when one comedian tries to improv with another, far more talented comic who just naturally shows them up. It used to happen all the time on live broadcasts, and those YouTubin' youngsters of today don't know how to be spontaneously funny instead of formulated and rehearsed so they tend to clam up when the live cameras start rolling. Watch as PewDiePie, a supposed comedian and "video game megastar" who has millions of subscribers on YouTube for some reason, gets shown up by the naturally funny Conan O'Brien. Oh, and they play Far Cry Primal too! (Barely NSFW due to language) To be fair, young PewDiePie was probably transfixed by Conan's amazing pompadour, I've heard it can be quite distracting when seen in person... -Via FAIL Blog | ||||||||

It will be the first feature-length movie made entirely of paintings. The animated film will require 56,800 oil on canvas paintings, 12 for every second of the movie. The paintings, by a crew of 100 artists, will all evoke Van Gogh’s unique style, and will reference 120 of his works. The plot is based on 800 of his letters. | Posted: 01 Mar 2016 12:00 PM PST The hit Broadway show Hamilton features a catchy rap song called “My Shot” (hear it here). | Dad Reenacts Summons From Final Fantasy VII Posted: 01 Mar 2016 10:00 AM PST Dads who enjoy spending quality quazy time with their kids are exemplary examples of manhood, especially when they embrace their child's geeky nature and go all out to impress their nerdy kin. Nick Luciano's dad is one of these rare examples, and he is willing to do damn near anything to make his son smile, including making a fool of himself on video so his nerdy son can share his pride with the world. Dad has starred in a few of Nick's videos, reenacting the taunt animations from Super Smash Bros., the Turbo Victory Poses from Street Fighter II and, most recently, the Summons from Final Fantasy VII. Now we just need to figure out how to summon Nick's dad to our side when a battle is about to begin... -Via Geeks Are Sexy

Then the power of the demons was stronger than the will to live. You're gone. May your soul find its peace. Your Manfred."
