Self-Proclaimed "Meanest Mom in the World" Throws away Kids' Ice Cream

Posted: 24 Apr 2016 04:00 AM PDT

(Photo: Calgary Reviews)

Jaime Primak Sullivan wants her three young children to learn good manners. So when they didn't thank a Dairy Queen server for giving them ice cream, she threw it in the trash. She writes on Facebook:

The young lady (maybe 17) handed each child their ice cream. Not one looked her in the eye. Not one said thank you. Not to her, not to me... So I waited. I counted to 10

in my head as they dug into their ice cream and the young lady just looked at me (probably because she thought I was hearing voices) and I watched as my children strolled out the door. I followed them outside where I calmly collected their ice creams and my kids watched in horror as I deposited them into the nearby garbage can. All 3 launched into mass hysteria. I waited. Quiet. Calm. When they realized I had something to say, they quieted down.

I explained that one day, if they were lucky, they would work a job like that young lady. And I would hope that people would see them. Really see them. Look them in the eye and say thank you. We are too old at 8/7/5 to move through our days without exercising manners and honestly basic human decency.

So today, I am the meanest mom in the world.

Sullivan's post has gone viral, gaining 49,000 shares so far. Some commenters think that she did exactly the right thing, giving her kids some tough love about being polite. But Ronda Robinson at PJ Media disagrees:

Good parenting does not include setting your children up to fail or engaging in public humiliation. Punishment should be reserved for crimes. It shouldn't be a punishable offense to not say "thank you" or to fail "see" a teenager behind the ice cream counter. These are traits of childish behavior at best, or failed parenting skills at worst, depending on the children.

What do you think?

Simon's Cat Logic - Let Me In, Let Me Out!

Posted: 24 Apr 2016 02:00 AM PDT

In this episode of Simon’s Cat Logic, we explore the cat’s desire to always be on the other side of the door, and why they particularly want to be with you in the bathroom. As a bonus, we get the full cartoon “Let Me In.”

(YouTube link)

We’ve reached the point at my house where we have more cats than people now, so I’m known as “Door Opener.” The rest of the family will feed them, but no one is as responsive to their desires about going in or out. I've also notoiced their ability to communicate their desires clearly depends on the cat's age and intelligance. Yes, I’m turning into a crazy cat lady.

Little Owl Uses Mushroom as Umbrella

This is Poldi, a pet owl. He's just one and a half years old.

Poldi lives with Tanya Brandt, a photographer. Recently, when Poldi and Brandt went out together, it started to train. Poldi sought shelter under a mushroom. The resulting photo is like something out of a fantasy movie!

You can see more photos of Poldi at play at Bored Panda.

The Evolution of Iron Man in Television & Film

Posted: 23 Apr 2016 10:00 PM PDT

Iron Man has been on TV and in movies for 50 years, although the first 40 years of that was in animation only -and most of them after that! The look of the character has changed yet stayed the same, usually pretty faithful to the comic book version.

So, Robert Downey, Jr. is the only man to portray Iron Man as a live action hero? Okay, at least we have a lot of him. And a lot of Iron man incarnations you’ve never seen, in this timeline by Burger Fiction.

Actors Have Been Dying to Play the Role of Yorick in Hamlet

Posted: 23 Apr 2016 08:00 PM PDT

(Photo: David Tennant as Prince Hamlet by The Times)

In Shakespeare's Hamlet, Yorick the court jester was famous for his wit and performances:

Alas, poor Yorick! I knew him, Horatio: a fellow
of infinite jest, of most excellent fancy: he hath
borne me on his back a thousand times; and now, how
abhorred in my imagination it is! my gorge rims at
it. Here hung those lips that I have kissed I know
not how oft. Where be your gibes now? Your
gambols? your songs? your flashes of merriment,
that were wont to set the table on a roar? Not one
now, to mock your own grinning? quite chap-fallen?
Now get you to my lady's chamber, and tell her, let
her paint an inch thick, to this favour she must
come; make her laugh at that.

Yet he is silent throughout Hamlet because he is dead (though this condition doesn't stop Hamlet's father). Nonetheless, because Yorick appears in one of the most famous scenes of Shakespearean drama, some actors want to play him. So they have bequeathed their skulls on the condition that they be used in performances of Hamlet. Hyperallergic reports:

For example, there’s John Reed, who worked as a stagehand at the Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia in the 19th century. As the theater’s website explains, he stated in his will that he “wanted his skull separated from his body, duly prepared, and used to represent the skull of Yorrick in Hamlet. His wish was granted, and the skull is signed by many famous actors of the day who performed in Shakespeare’s play.” Macy Halford in the 2009 article “Skullduggery” for the New Yorker, noted that another man named Juan Potomachi in 1955 “promised two hundred thousand pesos to the Teatro Dramático in Buenos Aires, on the condition that his skull be used as Yorick in any future productions of Hamlet,” a proposition that was apparently accepted.

P.S. Today is the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death.

Why is Being Scared So Fun?

Posted: 23 Apr 2016 06:00 PM PDT

Thrill-seekers line up to see the latest scary movie, tour a haunted house, or ride a roller coaster. These same people would hate the idea of being the victim of an armed robbery. But some will step close to the edge of a real cliff just for the thrill of it. What makes us do these things? It’s chemistry, of course, acting on our brains. Adrenaline and endorphins are a thrill in themselves.

(YouTube link)

But the effect varies from person to person, and I can tell you it varies within a person’s lifetime, too. I once waited in line for the latest roller coaster or horror films, too. But at a certain point, the memories of those chemical rushes is enough. Now I am more concerned with the resulting indigestion or sleepless nights that may follow. Kids Who Look Just Like Their Famous Parents

Posted: 23 Apr 2016 04:00 PM PDT

It must be great for a famous face to create an offspring who has the exact same famous face, but I can see how that might suck for the kids.

After all, no matter what they want to do in life their recognizable face will make people think they're following in their parent's footsteps and hoping to become famous.

Some lazy kids will see the similarity in looks as an easy way to profit from their mom or dad's fame, while others will grow up never knowing the famous person they look exactly like.

A Member of the Little Rock Nine Discusses Her Struggle to Attend Central High

Posted: 23 Apr 2016 02:00 PM PDT

The National Museum of American History in Washington, DC, has an exhibition called “American Stories.” A recent donation to the museum came from Minnijean Brown Trickey, who presented the Smithsonian with her high school graduation dress, a graduation program from the New Lincoln School in New York, and a suspension slip from her previous high school. And that’s where Trickey’s story begins, of how she became a part of history in 1957 as one of the Little Rock Nine.

Although about 80 African-American students had been approved by the Little Rock School Board to transfer to Central the following year, the number dwindled to 10 after the students were told they couldn't participate in extracurricular activities, their parents were in danger of losing their jobs, and there was a looming threat of violence. The parents of a tenth student, Jane Hill, decided not to allow their daughter to return after the mob scene on the first day.

According to Trickey, her real motivation for attending Central was that it was nine blocks from her house and she and her two best friends, Melba Pattillo and Thelma Mothershed would be able to walk there.

“The nine of us were not especially political,” she says. “We thought, we can walk to Central, it’s a huge, beautiful school, this is gonna be great,” she remembers.

“I really thought that if we went to school together, the white kids are going to be like me, curious and thoughtful, and we can just cut all this segregation stuff out,” she recalls. Unfortunately, she was wrong.

It took the 101st Airborne to get the students into the high school, but staying there was just as difficult. Read Trickey’s story at Smithsonian.

14 Simple Charts For Teaching Children That Life Is Hard

Posted: 23 Apr 2016 10:00 AM PDT

Life is hard. As you age, some parts of it get better while other parts get worse. All you can control is your attitude toward those things. You have to shrug off the bad and be grateful for the good, and that’s the way to be happy. A image challenge at Cracked produced some visualizations of life ahead for young people that will make you laugh -if you don’t take it too seriously or personally. This one really struck home:

My kids, at 17 and 19, are in the valley of respect. That’s comforting in a way, because the only way to go from here is up. See all 14 charts at Cracked.

Animal Planet TV Crew Finds Castaway While Filming Off The Coast Of Australia

Posted: 23 Apr 2016 08:00 AM PDT

TV shows love to send crews out to remote locations where few humans dare to tread and film the whole experience, because audiences who are stuck at home eat that extreme travel stuff up.

The crews sent out on these shoots expect to find adventure, hardship and plenty of amazing scenery to film, but they certainly don't expect to find an actual castaway while filming!

A documentary crew shooting an episode of Animal Planet's “River Monsters” off the coast of Australia came across a strange sight as they neared an island- a frantic man named Termini yelling “give me something to drink!”

Termini swam out to the crew's boat and happily drank a bottle of water, then told the crew that he's an amateur fisherman who got lost after he left his boat to look for oysters.

He'd been stranded for 60 hours, suffered from heat stroke and swore he would die alone on the island before the crew came along.

The lucky castaway made a full recovery, and the footage was left in the episode so Termini can prove to his friends and family that his incredible rescue story is totally true.

Time Traveler Running for President; Knows He’ll Win

Posted: 23 Apr 2016 07:00 AM PDT

While some conspiracy theorists want to unveil the administration in Washington as the lizard people they are, and others want the truth about UFOs to be revealed, one presidential candidate wants to reveal government breakthroughs in time travel, teleportation, and travel to Mars. Seattle lawyer Andrew D. Basiago is running for president.

To be fair, Basiago has seen great leadership in action. He says he once traveled back in time to 1863 and witnessed Abraham Lincoln’s speech at Gettysburg. He also says he’s been to the future, 2054 specifically, so he has a notion of the historical pitfalls a commander-in-chief must avoid. One could even argue that his sojourn on Mars in 1981 is relevant foreign relations experience. After all, there were aliens.

Basiago says he’s had conversations with both President Bush’s, President Clinton, and President Obama literally decades before they served as president. They were given prior notification of their presidencies. And that’s part of the reason Basiago went public about Project Pegasus a few years ago. “Our secret time-travel capability is informing things like the process by which we select the president,” he explains, sounding every bit the reformer. “The cover-up has gone on for too long.”

How to Make S'more Eclairs

Posted: 23 Apr 2016 06:00 AM PDT

Hannah, the Domestic Gothess, made these simply perfect eclairs with a toasted marshmallow cream filling. She dipped the tops in melted chocolate, then added gourmet marshmallows. For a special treat, she covered the tops with craquelin, which is a type of French pastry dough. This give her s'more eclairs an extra crunch and sweetness. You can find her full recipe here.
