| Why Utilities Are Finally Falling in Love With Electric Vehicles As most energy investors know, Tesla Motors (Nasdaq: TSLA) is the biggest electric vehicle company in the world.
But many EV companies - like Tesla - are assuming new identities. They are becoming sustainable energy companies. And utility companies are making it happen. They are embracing EVs. And for good reason. For years, utilities were considered stable, income-producing machines. But with the advent of distributed energy resources - like solar - utilities have had to face the problem of declining revenues. Enter the EVs. At first, utilities - along with many auto industry pundits - dismissed EVs as another passing fad.
They said EVs would disappear as soon as oil prices dropped. But oil prices are at historic lows, and EV sales are going through the roof. The bottom line is utilities are now coming around to the fact that EVs are here to stay. And that is good news for them. EVs use an average of 261 kilowatt-hours of electricity every month.
That means EVs are shaping up to be a huge future source of energy and income for utilities. It could lead to an additional $100 billion worth of electricity sales annually. In addition, higher electricity sales would increase the pressure on utilities to lower rates. That would benefit all utility customers.
The Dollar's Bull Run Is Over One of the world's premier currency experts says the dollar's almost unprecedented bull market is coming to a dramatic close. "I'm moving significant amounts of my personal net worth in anticipation of what's to come," he says. To find out the four steps he's taking... and how a dollar bear market will hit the stock and bond markets... just go here. |
The reason is most EV charging takes place in the wee hours of the morning - the time when electricity use is at its lowest levels. That means utilities can rake in more revenue without building new generating plants. A New Source of Power for Utilities
But there's another cost-saving angle. This one is quite unique.
While it's not in place yet, the potential for a utility to control its distributed energy resources would enable it to have a huge, growing baseload source of power whenever it needs it.
Powerful software can look at the status of all the EVs in a utility's territory. When the utility needs additional power, it could instantly tell any number of available EVs to start dumping power into the grid.
EV owners would receive credit for the power produced. For utilities, it's a huge cost avoidance, since they would not have to build, operate and maintain a new power plant.
Utilities are just starting to consider all of this in a positive way. Let's face it: This is completely disruptive to the 100-year-old way of doing things - from a utility's perspective. However, both utilities and the bodies that regulate them are like big ships. It takes time to turn them around. But this is the direction we are going. There will be plenty of new investment opportunities ahead.
You can be sure I'll be reporting on all of them. Stay tuned.
Good investing,
Dave
NAZI SECRETS TO KILL THE ELECTRIC CAR? Here's a photo that was taken in November of 1943. The explosion on the ground: a top-secret Nazi plant. And it has an incredible connection to a recent development in the energy industry. That's because a little-known company has brought these secrets "back to life"... And what it is about to do with them could soon KILL the electric car... And hand investors 636% gains over the coming months. Profit from the company that could KILL the electric car. | |
