Bots are potentially useful for brands, letting them reach more people and generate engagement on platforms such as Facebook Messenger. But an automated system is no substitute for a flesh-and-blood social media team, says Eddie Francis of Alter Agents. "Current bots are improving quickly, but they still lack empathy," he says.

Snapchat has signed a three-year deal with the All England Tennis and Croquet Club that lets the social network serve up live stories linked to the Wimbledon tennis tournament. Snapchat will also offer ads for tournament sponsors, such as Stella Artois and Haagen-Dazs.

Snapchat plans Discover revamp to draw readers to ads

Snapchat is redesigning its Discover home page to enable publishers to display content to draw in viewers, instead of just their logo. The move is intended to entice more traffic to Discover Stories, where much of the platform's ads are shown.

Instagram has added a business tool to its mobile app to help smaller brands monitor the success of campaigns on the platform, as well as company profiles that allow users to contact businesses directly. "The way I envision this is there are a lot of businesses on the platform that may be new to advertising, or not advertising yet, and this is a straightforward, easy way to start advertising on the platform," Instagram's Jim Squires said.
