We've set a huge goal to get 3 million people to register or commit to vote -- and we're counting on you to help us get there! Commit to voting for Hillary Clinton and all the Democrats on your ballot: Lewis -- Here's some good news that you may have missed if you were resting up after our incredible and unforgettable Democratic Convention: on Friday, courts struck down cynical, restrictive election laws in Kansas, North Carolina, and Wisconsin. A state court is allowing more than 17,000 Kansans who registered at the DMV but did not provide a birth certificate or other documents the right to vote in the upcoming primary, saying "losing one's vote is an irreparable harm." A federal court called the North Carolina law imposing a strict ID requirement, reducing early voting, and eliminating same-day registration a deliberate attempt to "target African-Americans with almost surgical precision." Meanwhile, a separate federal court wrote of Wisconsin's law imposing strict ID requirements and reducing early voting that the Republican "legislature's immediate goal was to achieve a partisan objective, but the means of achieving that objective was to suppress the reliably Democratic vote of Milwaukee's African-Americans." This is a huge win for democracy, Lewis, because now tens of thousands more Americans will have access to the polls and can have their votes counted on Election Day. But the fact that these laws were passed by Republican legislatures and signed by Republican governors in the first place shows just how far they will go to make it more difficult for folks to cast their ballots -- and exactly why we can't take one single vote in this election for granted. That's why, as the Director of Voter Expansion here at the DNC, I'm asking you to make this commitment: that you'll vote in November (or earlier!), and you'll do everything you can to make sure your friends will, too. This is our most fundamental right as Americans -- and we know that when more people vote, Democrats win. So Lewis, add your name if I can count you in. Thanks for doing this, Pratt Pratt Wiley National Director of Voter Expansion Democratic National Committee |
