Dear Friend of Wildlife, Elephants are mighty creatures – but against poachers' guns, traps, and poisons they are incredibly vulnerable. Thankfully, wildlife heroes like Marguerite Apa stand between defenseless elephants and those who would profit off their slaughter. For 15 days at a time, she and her fellow eco-guards hike through the thick brush in in the Republic of Congo's Nouabale-Ndoki National Park, constantly on the lookout for poachers and other threats to wildlife. Park rangers like Marguerite are the first line of defense for elephants and other endangered wildlife – and as poaching and trafficking become more sophisticated and more deadly, their jobs have become more difficult and dangerous than ever before. That's why today, World Ranger Day, we're saying thanks to Marguerite and all of the rangers like her, who put their lives on the line to defend innocent animals who can't defend themselves from a poacher's gun.
