College Professor Attends Staff Meeting Naked, Colleagues Pretend Not to Notice

Posted: 03 Jul 2016 04:00 AM PDT

(Photo: Victoria Bateman)

Dr. Victoria Bateman teaches economics at Cambridge University in the UK. She has a strong opinion about a current political controversy in Britain. So before walking into a meeting of 30 colleagues to discuss teaching materials and course curricula, she stripped off her top and wrote a message across her breasts.

Bateman's nudity was not a distraction. If these academics even noticed it, they gave no sign. The Telegraph (content warning: nudity) reports:

A source who took part in the meeting told the Daily Telegraph: “It is well known to the faculty that she has posed naked but obviously the behaviour here was different. One thing is to pose naked and another to show up naked.

“This was a standard meeting about the teaching of economics and we moved away from her state of dress. We remained silent on that issue and managed to get through the agenda in the meeting.”

If seeing Bateman's breasts made any impression on the chair of the meeting, it was only a practical one:

Nigel Knight, director of studies at Churchill College and the chair of the meeting, glanced at her and then said to his secretary: “I think we need some cups for the coffee” and everyone else just stared straight ahead.

15 Out-of-This-World Facts About Men in Black

Posted: 03 Jul 2016 01:59 AM PDT

When Men in Black came out in 1997, it was such a hit that two sequels were made. It might have been the biggest movie of the year, except that was the year Titanic ruled the theaters. Still, we loved Men in Black because it combined action, science fiction, and comedy all in one movie. Let’s learn some behind the scenes facts about the film.

1. WILL SMITH USED TO BE KNOWN AS “THE KING OF THE 4TH."

Smith had back-to-back number one Fourth of July weekend hits in the mid-1990s: In 1996, Independence Day dominated the box office, and the next year Men in Black opened in first place. Though 1999’s Wild Wild West was one of Smith’s lowest openings, bringing in just $27,687,484 during its opening weekend, it was a strong enough total to top the box office charts. In 2002 and 2008, Men in Black II and Hancock, respectively, solidified Smith’s moniker. In fact, every single time a movie starring Will Smith has opened in July, it has opened in the top position.

10. BASKETBALL BRACES INSPIRED VINCENT D'ONOFRIO’S BUG WALK.

The actor, who played a bug-like alien named Edgar, told Allocine how he came up with his bug walk: In addition to watching bug documentaries, “I was walking by a sporting goods store one day, and I saw these braces that the basketball players wear,” he said. “I went in and I tried one on and I realized you could lock it off, you could tape the hinges so that you can’t bend either way. So I bought two of them and I took them home and I put them on. So, I slightly bent my leg and locked off the braces so I couldn’t move either way, but it was slightly bent and I taped off both my feet and I tried to walk and it created this restrained, physical odd thing.”

A Drunk Driving PSA Starring Han Solo

Posted: 03 Jul 2016 12:00 AM PDT

Seeing as how it's a holiday weekend here in the United States, and people will be partying hard in honor of our nation's birthday, it's probably a good time to talk about drunk driving.

Basically, you're better off sleeping on the floor of some cantina on a total dustbowl of a planet than trying to drive your (Millennium) Falcon home, and that way you'll live to drink another day!

(YouTube Link)

Han Solo would never drive drunk because he has a shaggy yet sober co-pilot who is happy to serve as the designated driver, but take it from this fun PSA by OneMinuteGalactica and don't risk a DUI this Fourth of July.

A Rare Smile

Posted: 02 Jul 2016 10:00 PM PDT

It’s pretty rare to see someone from the 19th century smiling in a photograph, and even rarer to see a Native American from the era with a big smile. But this young lady is beaming! According to DrColdReality,

The girl's name is written in the lower left: O-o-be, and she's a Kiowa. The photo was taken in 1894. Background, dress, and physical appearance of the image are all period-authentic.

Smiles were still somewhat rare in photos from that era.

Man Vapes World's Hottest Chili Pepper, Instantly Regrets His Decision

Posted: 02 Jul 2016 08:00 PM PDT

Lots of people are living that vape life nowadays, despite warnings about health risks and a disease called popcorn lung, but vaping usually involves nicotine or THC.

So what happens when a genius named Russell Hawkins decides to vape Carolina Reaper pepper oil to prove his manly might?

He winds up crying like a little baby, but then he snorts some powdered Reaper pepper and delivers the coup de grace by rubbing it in his eyes.

(Barely NSFW due to language, fast forward to around 5:00 for the action)

Carolina Reaper pepper oil doesn't even belong on food, so why would someone think smoking or snorting it is a good idea? Because internet fame is a hell of a drug...

The Librarian as a Social Worker

Posted: 02 Jul 2016 05:59 PM PDT

American public libraries and the librarians who work there have always had a philosophy of welcomeness to those who want to use the facilities. People who are homeless need a spot where they can exist during the day when shelters are closed, where they won’t be shooed away in favor of paying customers. And as the homeless population continues to grow, libraries are providing more and more services to the homeless people they are so familiar with.

“It’s true, libraries are warm and quiet places for people without homes to go,” says Ryan Dowd, executive director of Hesed House, an Illinois-based homelessness outreach group. “But they are also sanctuaries from the tedium of homelessness. Being homeless is not just dangerous and exhausting — it’s extremely boring.”

In 2013, Dowd created a presentation titled “A Librarian’s Guide to Homelessness,” which he first delivered at his local public library in Aurora, Illinois. He expected it would be a one-off. Since then he’s traveled extensively, giving the talk at dozens of libraries across the country and in other countries, including Canada and Estonia. (A version of the presentation is also available on YouTube.)

“What I heard a lot of was, ‘How do we serve our homeless patrons better?’” said Dowd. “That surprised me. It was not about minimizing the disruptiveness or destructiveness of homeless patrons. It was about how to reach out to that demographic and serve them better.”

Libraries are looking into ways to meet the needs of their patrons, including the homeless. The San Francisco Public Library even hired a full-time social worker in 2009. Several others have followed their lead. Read about the many ways libraries are helping those who need it most, at Timeline. -via Digg

You know those insane (and utterly hilarious) Old Spice commercials starring Terry Crews and that other guy who's not Terry Crews, the ads where Terry is constantly shirtless and yelling?

Well, now they're more than just an amazing advertising campaign designed to sell deodorant- they're a playable video game!

Don't be afraid to play the Old Spice You Land Featuring You video game, even though it may seem too fresh for some, just keep staring at Terry's bouncing pecs and repeat the words "it's only a game".

Old Vase Used as a Doorstop Sells for $860,000

Posted: 02 Jul 2016 02:00 PM PDT

(Photo: Hansons Auctioneers)

According to the family, it had been acquired by a now-deceased relative in the 1930s. For many years, the vase was used as a doorstop at their home in Birmingham, UK.

But this is no ordinary vase. It's Chinese porcelain dating back to the reign of the Quianlong Emperor (1711-1799). It may have been made in the Imperial kilns for the Emperor's summer home. Hansons Auctioneers sold it to a buyer for the equivalent of $850,000 USD. You can read more about it at the Huffington Post.

R.I.P. Elie Wiesel, Holocaust Survivor and Author

(Photo: World Economic Forum)

When he was 15 years old, the family of Elie Wiesel of Sighet, Romania was deported to the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp operated by Nazi Germany. Among them, only Wiesel survived the 8 horrible months of torture, starvation, and murder that preceded liberation.

After the war, the orphaned Wiesel went to France, then to the newborn State of Israel. He became a journalist. In 1954, he wrote an 800-page memoir in Yddish of his Holocaust experiences. 4 years later, he published a much shorter version in French, which has been translated into English with the title Night.

Through Night, Wiesel taught the world about the hell of the Holocaust. For his humanitarian work, he earned the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986. More honors followed, including an invitation to become President of Israel in 2007. He died today at the age of 87. You can read more about Wiesel's life at Haaretz.

Mama rat will not rest until the snake drops her baby. And not even then! The rat chases the snake off into the brush, to make sure he won’t come back and try that again! Meanwhile, we are all holding our breath to see if the baby survived the incident. When have you ever rooted that hard for a rat? -via reddit

She designs wooden wedge shoes that are so beautiful that they look like they belong in museums instead of closets. They're custom made by craftsmen in Vietnam, who take 18 days to make each pair.

The Most Common Surnames In Every European Country

Posted: 02 Jul 2016 07:59 AM PDT

Among the thousands of surnames being used by families here in the United States there are tons of truly ancestral last names and a bunch of fakes adopted by immigrants so they'd sound more "American".

Many of the real last names link families back to their European ancestry, which makes tracing their lineage fairly easy since the surnames are still being used in Europe to this day.

As you can see on the map above, posted by Redditor Teepr back in 2014, the most common European surnames are largely just what you'd expect- the Smiths are still a band in the U.K., Papadopoulos is still as Greek as it gets, and the Mullers are still amassed in Germany and Switzerland.

But, as this updated map posted by educational blogger Jakub Marian shows, there's a bit of a discrepancy when it comes to which last name is most common in Portugal.

The map above says Almeida is most common, but every other source seems to indicate Silva is actually the most common Portuguese last name.

(Image Link)

Considering how many people of Portuguese ancestry in Latin and South American countries have the last name Silva I'm inclined to believe it's actually the winner.

Illusion of the Year 2016

Posted: 02 Jul 2016 05:59 AM PDT

(YouTube link)

Yesterday, everyone’s mind was blown by the cylinder illusion by Kokichi Sugihara, which won second place in the Illusion of the Year competition. So who won first place? That would be Mathew T. Harrison and Gideon P. Caplovitz of the University of Nevada Reno. Their illusion is called “Motion Integration Unleashed: New Tricks for an Old Dog.” While it’s not as puzzling as the cylinders, this one becomes mind-blowing at about 24 seconds in. The twenty top-rated illusions are linked at the Illusion of the Year site. They’re all good.
