Husband Of The Year

HUSBAND OF THE YEAR
News broke yesterday that Melania Trump may have worked in the United States as a model on a tourist visa, which is technically illegal—even though Melania has previously suggested several times that she worked on a short-term visa. Not only does this story highlight the need for comprehensive immigration reform and the complexities of the immigration system, but, if true, it also means that Melania Trump most likely could not have become a citizen under her husband's proposed stringent immigration policies. As everyone knows by now, Trump has made extreme anti-immigrant policies the cornerstone of his political circus—including a mass deportation policy that would cost at least a whopping $114 billion. And the reality TV star said he will "end forever" with "no exceptions" the H-1B program—which is program Melania most likely used if the new reports are true. Whoops.
WHAT'S TRENDING
OLYMPICS. Be sure to protect your vocal cords so you can spend the next few weeks chanting "USA USA USA" in the greatest sports event: the Olympics. Opening ceremonies are tonight, be sure to look out for the Refugee Olympic Team and for Muslim American fencer Ibtihaj Muhammad, who is the first U.S. athlete to compete in a hijab. She was the runner-up to be the U.S.'s flag bearer—at the same time presidential nominee Donald Trump wants to ban Muslims from coming to the United States. And this year's Olympics will have the most openly LGBT athletes ever.
It's not all fun and games. Don't let the Olympics distract you from the fact that Zika is still a massive crisis.
Work work work work work. The jobs numbers are in for July and 255,000 new jobs were added to the economy. Employment growth has been healthy, but, as Center for American Progress economist Michael Madowitz explains, "significant risks to the economy remain." So, maybe we might not be able to afford Trump's economic recklessness right now.
Child care crisis. High-quality affordable child care is out of reach for millions of American families, particularly for African-American families who are working more and earning less. This just in: The average annual cost of center-based child care for an infant and a 4 year-old eats up 42 percent of the median income for a typical African American family. We clearly need solutions to help put child care more in reach for families. Read more here.
No experience. Another national security leader has decided that Donald Trump may "pose a threat to our national security." In an op-ed titled "I Ran the C.I.A. Now I'm Endorsing Hillary Clinton," Michael Morell explains that Donald Trump is unqualified to be commander in chief and is also dangerous.
