Marvel Movie Scenes That Were Way More Disturbing In The Comics Posted: 04 Dec 2016 04:00 AM PST Marvel movies have reached a point of complexity with their interwoven plot lines that the comics are actually being adjusted to fit the movie lore instead of vice versa. But there's one element that had to be changed so the movie adaptations could receive a PG-13 rating- the brutal and disturbing scenes found in the comics. These family friendly movies rely on audiences having a great feeling about the heroes and a really bad feeling about the villains, but in the comics the line between good and bad gets a bit blurry. Hank Pym, the original Ant-Man, has a history of domestic violence against Janet Pym, aka Wasp. Mutant siblings Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch are so close they once carried on an incestuous relationship. Oh, and that tame spin put on the beginning of the Civil War in the third Captain America movie? That was way too family friendly when compared to how it happened in the comics- it all started when a villain named Nitro used his explosive powers to essentially nuke the town of Stamford, Connecticut... Dialect Coach Breaks Down The Accents 32 Different Actors Use In Movies Posted: 04 Dec 2016 12:00 AM PST The accents you hear in movies aren't typically what you'd call accurate, and this lack of accuracy can be really distracting and detract from the viewing experience. Of course, having no accent at all can ruin a movie too, just look at how bad Kevin Costner's portrayal of Robin Hood was largely because he refused to use a British accent. But even though they have dialect coaches like Erik Singer available to help actors master a more realistic accent it seems they'd rather let actors like Brad Pitt and Will Smith do their own thang. One of these things is not like the others. Pro wrestling is performance art, following a script for the audience's entertainment. It wasn't always like that. In the early 20th century, wrestling was a legitimate competition like any other, with rules and challengers hoping to beat the champions. And it wasn't nearly as fun as the modern version.   But professional wrestling began to change in a way unlike anything ever seen in sports history. While boxing had known to be fixed from time to time, and the “Black Sox Scandal” had briefly tarnished Major League Baseball, no legitimate sport had ever made the full transition into what the WWE now calls “sports entertainment”—fully scripted, predetermined matchups, with chosen champions. Rose Light Bulb Posted: 03 Dec 2016 08:00 PM PST Redditor boomboomsaIoon found this light bulb in the attic of his workplace. It's an Aerolux neon bulb, the light rose model. Aerolux bulbs were manufactured from 1938 to 1974, and this one is estimated to be from the 1940s. Here what it would look like in a working lamp. Commenter syco54645 has an Aerolux model with violets inside. See a video of the bulb in action here. You can still buy new light bulbs with sculptured filaments, but they don't have that lovely vintage look.

Great Ideas For DIY Holiday Gift Baskets Posted: 03 Dec 2016 04:00 PM PST There is no gift more personal or thoughtful than a gift basket, but they can also come off as a bunch of junk you threw together at the last minute because you couldn't be bothered to buy a real gift. However, the junky factor can be avoided by thinking about what the recipient likes, what you can make that won't look like crap, and how much the recipient cares about overall presentation. Guys are less likely to give or receive gift baskets during the holidays, but if the baskets contained cool stuff for barbecuing, like a homemade rub and sauce and some special tools, they'd get the gift basket appeal. And speaking of appeal- orange-cardamom marmalade. It's a yummy treat that's pretty easy to make, and it adds that homemade wow factor to any basket you put together. And just look at that healthy glow. The Victorians' Favorite Drug Posted: 03 Dec 2016 10:00 AM PST A couple hundred years ago, before aspirin and drugs that dealt with specific health problems, people could seek relief from not only physical pain, but also stress and depression with laudanum. It's easy to see how, as the drug was a tincture of opium in alcohol. In the first half of the 18th century, you could get it over the counter. Laudanum gained a reputation as the answer to everything. Laudanum became widely used throughout Victorian society as a medicine, and soon many writers, poets, and artists (along with many ordinary people) became addicted. Bram Stoker, Charles Dickens, George Eliot, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Percy Bysshe Shelley, Lord Byron, and many others were all known to have used laudanum. Some managed to take it briefly while ill, but others became hopelessly dependent. Most famously, the English writer Thomas De Quincey wrote a whole book—Confessions of an English Opium-Eater (1821)—on his use of opium and its derivatives. The book proposed that, unlike alcohol, opium improved the creative powers, an opinion that only served to make the drug more appealing to those searching for artistic and literary inspiration. A number of other writers also played on the perceived glamor of the drug, praising its ability to enhance the imagination. But at what price? We still have the literary output spurred by laudanum, but when addiction took hold and everything fell apart, creative activity would cease.
