Check Please!
That's what a majority of voters in battleground states are asking of Senate Democrats after Trump's election. According to a new CAP Action and Hart Research poll released today, a majority of voters across 14 battleground states want Senate Democrats to serve as a check and balance on President-elect Trump, even if that means opposing or blocking some of his policies. The poll surveyed voters in 14 battleground states, all of which have Senate races in 2018, and found that up to 61 percent of voters think the Democratic Senator should stand up to Trump. In other words, people who voted for Trump, still want Democrats to block or oppose his agenda.
The poll also found that Trump's health care priorities—privatizing Medicare, repealing the Affordable Care Act, cutting Medicaid spending, and defunding Planned Parenthood—are deeply at odds with the priorities of battleground voters. And healthcare isn't the only place where battleground voters disagree with Trump's proposed policies. Trump's policies that are at odds with his populist rhetoric—like opposing raising the minimum wage and repealing Wall Street regulations—are also deeply unpopular with battleground voters.
Moral of the story? Trump's election was not a mandate for a right-wing agenda. See the breakdown of the poll here.
TRANSITION TRACKER
Foreclosure King. Trump's pick for Treasury Secretary, Steve Mnuchin, is looking increasingly swampy after a memo was leaked showing that there was "widespread misconduct" at Mnuchin's OneWest Bank. Under Mnuchin, OneWest repeatedly violated California foreclosure laws. Not only did OneWest foreclose on a 90 year-old woman for a 27 cent bill, they also backdated documents, thereby speeding up the process of kicking people out of their homes, while Mnuchin pocketed millions. Trump campaigned on promises to American workers, but his selection of Steve "Foreclosure King" Mnuchin as Treasury Secretary shows Trump's not planning on keeping his promises to the people who elected him.
WHAT'S TRENDING
Capitol Hill. Congress is back, and surprise! They still don't agree. Republican's first order of business (besides trying to kill their independent ethics watchdog)? Repeal the Affordable Care Act. This morning President Obama went to Capitol Hill to talk to congressional democrats about saving the law. Vice President-elect Pence also went to the hill to talk to congressional Republicans about repealing it. President-elect Trump tweeted. Republican leaders (Pence and Speaker Ryan) say they want to ensure an "orderly transition." But they have yet to provide a replacement plan. As a reminder: a GOP "repeal and delay" plan would still cause chaos.
American made. Ford Motor Company announced yesterday that it was cancelling plans for a plant in Mexico and instead investing $700 million into existing plants in Michigan, creating 700 jobs. This is great news for Ford workers and the American manufacturing industry. Of course, President-elect Trump was quick to claim credit for the Ford decision. However, the Ford CEO said that there was "no negotiation" with Trump. Instead, the company chose to invest in Michigan due to market conditions and the fact that Ford wants to "build on the investment in job creation we've been able to produce over the last five years," aka during the Obama years. Trump, on the other hand, is filling his team with anti-worker billionaires who aren't going to help the middle class. We shouldn't believe the media circus every time Trump tweets. Governing by tweet is not going to help workers—policies that ensure workers' economic security will.
UNDER THE RADAR
#KeepItPublic. Yesterday, while all eyes were on House Republicans' ethics drama, the House launched its first major attack on the environment of the year: approving an amendment that paves the way for Congress to sell off America's public lands. The amendment enables any proposed bill to get rid of public lands – whether by privatizing Yosemite or giving away taxpayer-owned energy reserves—to be considered as having no cost to taxpayers. But America's national parks, national forests, and public lands are worth a lot more than nothing and should be protected for future generations. Congress's move isn't just a rip-off of taxpayers, it's also a robbery of the very places that define America.
ACTION OF THE DAY
Conflicts of Interest. Yesterday, we saw that resistance (especially in the form of calling members of congress) works. Today, CAP along with Public Citizen, Every Voice, Common Cause, People for the American Way, the Communications Workers of America are hosting a Call-in Day to call on Congress to act and address Trump's dangerous, unprecedented, and unconstitutional conflicts of interest. Ask your members to support a forthcoming Sen. Warren bill requiring the President to divest ownership of businesses and disclose all business dealings.
To participate, call the below numbers to connect with your two senators and your one representative before 5 p.m. EST today while congressional offices are open. You'll be automatically connected to your appropriate Member based on the zip code you provide. Senate: 1-866-985-2543 House: 1-866-948-8977.

GOOD NEWS
Free College. For many New York students, if all goes according to plan. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is out with a new proposal to eliminate tuition costs for students of families making under $125,000 at many NY state and city colleges. It could help nearly 1 million families if approved by the state legislature.
