This Dog Holds the Guinness Title for the World's Longest Tail

Posted: 23 Jan 2017 03:59 AM PST

We recently introduced you to the new world's tallest dog and now it's time to meet the new holder of the "world's longest tail" Guinness title. Keon is an Irish Wolfhound, which are known for having long tails to start with. But then even most wolfhounds don't have tails that measure 30.2" -that's over two and a half feet long and it doesn't even include the hair at the end. In fact, Keon's tail is 1.7" longer than the previous Guinness record holder.

No word on how often he knocks things over when he gets that thing wagging.

Believe In Pugcorns - They'll Cast A Spell On You

Posted: 23 Jan 2017 01:19 AM PST

believe in pugcorns by NemiMakeit

There are plenty of fake fantastic beasts out there, from the magical unicorns people claim to see prancing around the forest to those fire breathing dragons they see flying across the sky. But believe me when I tell you that pugcorns are real- and they're the most magical little mugs you'll ever meet! The pugcorn can turn a turd into a creampuff with a touch of their horn, and they vomit rainbows instead of undigested kibble. But the pugcorn's neatest trick is their ability to melt even the coldest of hearts with their sweet little smiles and sparkly eyes, an ability that may make them the key to world peace! Good thing they actually exist...

Spread smiles wherever you go with this Believe In Pugcorns t-shirt by NemiMakeit, it's the adorably silly way to show the world you want to believe in fantastic creatures and their power to make people happy!

Real-Life Horror Movie Locations

Posted: 23 Jan 2017 01:19 AM PST

The following article is from the new book Uncle John’s Uncanny Bathroom Reader.

Looking for a theme for your next road trip? How about “Places Where My Favorite Horror Films Were Shot”? If that appeals to you, here are a few scary spots you’ll want to add to your agenda.

SILENCE OF THE LAMBS (1991)

Creepy Place: The house where serial killer “Buffalo Bill” (Ted Levine) lived, where he kept kidnapped women in a pit in the basement, and where he is eventually confronted by FBI trainee Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster)

Real-Life Location: 8 Circle Street, Perryopolis, Pennsylvania (a suburb of Pittsburgh)

Story: In the movie, the house is located in the fictional town of Belvedere, Ohio, but most of the film was actually shot near Pittsburgh. This house was one of several picked by movie location scouts in 1989, two years before the film came out. “They were looking for a home in which you entered the front door and had a straight line through,” owner Barbara Lloyd told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. “They wanted it to look like a spider web, with Buffalo Bill drawing Jodie Foster into the foyer, into the kitchen, then into the basement.” The home got the approval of director Jonathan Demme, and a film crew showed up to film inside the home for three days in early 1990.

Extra: The home made the news in 2015, when the Lloyds put it up for sale. The Lloyds told reporters that the home has a full basement…but no creepy pit. (That part of the movie was filmed in a studio.)

THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT (1999)

Creepy Place: The woods where the young filmmakers disappear

Real-Life Location: Seneca Creek State Park, Maryland

Story:The Blair Witch Project was a low-budget independent horror film that shocked the entertainment industry when it earned $248 million worldwide, making it one the highest-grossing independent films in history. In the movie, three film students at a Maryland college go to the “Black Hills Forest,” near the town of Burkittsville, Maryland, to make a documentary about the “Blair Witch,” a ghost that purportedly haunts the woods. They disappear and are never seen again—but the footage they took in the woods is found a year later. The town of Burkittsville actually does exist, but most of the filming took place in nearby Seneca Creek State Park. (Why there? Because it was about five minutes away from the home of one of the filmmakers, Eduardo Sanchez.) You can visit the park…and you can even spend the night there camping. (Don’t forget to take a video camera!)

Extra: The ramshackle house where the film’s climactic final scene was filmed—a 200-year-old historic and abandoned home known as the Griggs House—was located in nearby Patapsco Valley State Park. After the film’s success, fans started showing up to see it…and to take pieces of it home as souvenirs. The house was demolished a few years later.

NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD(1968)

Creepy Place: The cemetery in the film’s opening scene…and the site of the movie’s first zombie attacks

Real-Life Location: Evans City Cemetery, Evans City, Pennsylvania

Story: Director George Romero’s horror classic opens with a young couple visiting the grave of their father in a rural Pennsylvania cemetery. Then—ZOMBIES! Well, actually just one: a zombie attacks the couple, and bashes the man’s head on a gravestone, killing him, while the woman watches in horror, clinging to another gravestone, engraved with the inscription “Nicholas Kramer (1842–1917).” The cemetery, the gravestone, and the small chapel seen in the film are all still there today. (Romero, who was filming without permission, chose the cemetery because of its remote location—he didn’t want shooting to be interrupted by locals or police. Also, it was convenient: Romero lived in Pittsburgh, less than 30 miles away.)

Extra: Fans have been going to the cemetery for decades to re-create the scene—complete with the Nicholas Kramer gravestone. (If you’re a fan of bad reenactments, check out some of them on YouTube.)

HALLOWEEN(1978)

Creepy Place: The house where the first murder takes place

Real-Life Location: 1000 Mission Street, South Pasadena, California

Story: It’s the house in the film’s opening scene, when six-year-old Michael Myers (Will Sandin) stabs his big sister to death. In the movie, the house is in the fictional town of Haddonfield, Illinois (named for Haddonfield, New Jersey—hometown of the film’s producer, Debra Hill), but in real life it was an abandoned house located on Meridian Avenue in South Pasadena. (The director, John Carpenter, lived in Hollywood, so the location was chosen out of convenience.) You can see the house today, but, as you may notice, it’s not at the same address: years after the film was made, the house was moved around the corner, and is now on Mission Street. What’s the famous horror house today? A chiropractor’s office.

Extra: A number of other sites featured in the film can still be seen in South Pasadena today, including the hardware store from which Myers stole a knife and his now-famous Halloween mask. (It’s no longer a hardware store, though—today it’s an Indian restaurant.)

THE EXORCIST (1973)

Creepy Place: The “Exorcist Stairs”

Real-Life Location: Prospect Street NW, at the corner of 36th Street NW, Georgetown, Washington, D.C.

Story: If you know the film, you know the famous scene in which Father Karras (Jason Miller) coaxes the demon out of the possessed Regan (Linda Blair), and allows it to possess him. Then, just as the demon is about to make him attack Regan, Karras throws himself out of a window. He lands at the top of a long, narrow flight of stone stairs, tumbles down it, and dies. The stairs, which were padded with rubber for the filming, have been known as the “Exorcist Stairs” ever since, and it’s still a regular stop for Washington, D.C., tourists. (Legend has it that during the filming of the stuntman falling down the steps, some students at nearby Georgetown University charged their friends money to watch from the school’s roof.)

MORE SCARY SPOTS

Dawn of the Dead (1978). Most of the second film in George Romero’s classic zombie series takes place in the Monroeville Mall in Monroeville, Pennsylvania. (Filming took place after stores were closed, every night from 11:00 p.m. until 7:00 a.m., over a period of three months.)

Friday the 13th (1980). Another gore-fest, this one was shot mostly at Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco, a Boy Scout camp in Hardwick Township, New Jersey. (Several other locations seen in the film can be seen in nearby Blairstown, New Jersey.)

A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984). The address in the film: 1428 Elm Street, Springwood, Ohio. In real life: 1428 North Genesee Avenue, Los Angeles. Across the street, at 1419 North Genesee, is where Johnny Depp’s character lived. (Nightmare was Depp’s first movie role.)

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974). The big farmhouse where the killer, Leatherface (Gunnar Hansen), lived was built in 1900 near Round Rock, Texas. In 1998, the house was dismantled, moved, and rebuilt more than 60 miles away, in the town of Kingsland, Texas, where it is now the Grand Central Cafe restaurant. (If you go, make sure to try a “Leatherface Lemonade”—lemonade and Jack Daniels. Reviews say they’re “killer good.”)

Make Yourself Look Cuter Than You Really Are With Meitu

Posted: 22 Jan 2017 11:59 PM PST

Apps like Snapchat and Instagram do all kinds of funny things with people's faces when their filters are applied to a photo, but most of these filters are silly and don't improve the look of the person in the photo.

But now there's Meitu, an app with filters that are both silly and enhance a person's looks- by making them look extremely cute!

Meitu is an anime beauty app that puts a sparkle in your big, beautiful eyes, adds a glow to your eerily smooth skin, and makes your rosy lips look perfectly pouty.

What's that you say? These words don't describe your face at all? They will when Meitu is finished with you!

Recently there has been talk about Meitu collecting user data and selling it, but the company behind the app told CNET why Meitu asks for so many seemingly unneeded permissions upon download:

Meitu told CNET in a statement that the data collection code was included because the company is headquartered in China, where tracking services provided by app stores such as the Apple App Store and Google Play are blocked.

"To get around this, Meitu employs a combination of third-party and in-house data tracking systems to make sure the user data tracked is consistent," said a Meitu spokesperson.

Sounds legit to me, and what's a little third-party data collection when you're left looking this fabulous, amirite? *wink*

A Photographer's Look Back at the 1980s Dancehall Scene

Posted: 22 Jan 2017 09:59 PM PST

Ska and rocksteady started in Jamaica in the 1960s and eventually evolved into reggae, dub, dancehall and ragga. The evolution of the music was a natural result of the island's independence. By the 80s, djs would bring sound systems to local clubs so the masses could enjoy live, local music.

Canadian photographer Beth Lesser continually travelled to the island to document the music scene of the 80s and even published a magazine called Reggae Quarterly.

Now you can take a look at some of her best images from the era over at Timeline.

Truck Driver Loses His Marbles

Posted: 22 Jan 2017 07:59 PM PST

A truck spill on I-465 near Indianapolis, Indiana, left 38,000 pounds of glass marbles spread along the highway. Sgt. John Perrine, Indiana State Police Public Information Officer, used emojis to report that there were no injuries. The discussion at Twitter revolved around how one would go about picking up so many marbles. One suggestion was to use a Shop Vac, while others thought it would be better to find some Hungry, Hungry Hippos. -via Dave Barry

This 9-Year-Old Boxer Chops Trees With Her Fists

Posted: 22 Jan 2017 05:59 PM PST

Many adults put on a show and act real tough when they're out in public, using their macho attitude as a way to hide their social anxiety, but if a young kid was born tough they don't have to act- they just show off their skills.

This is Evnika Saadvakass from Voronezh, Russia, and she is one of the toughest nine-year-olds on the planet. But Evnika doesn't have to act tough or talk tough, because she lets her lightning fast fists do all the talking for her.

Evnika has been training with her boxer father Rustram since she was three, and judging by her tree punching skills she'll be ready to become a pro fighter by the time she's in middle school!

Stefania Atupe's Makeup Art

Posted: 22 Jan 2017 01:59 PM PST

Makeup artist Stefania Atupe is a master of eyelid art. In fact, she channels the masters of art, like Van Gogh and Monet by recreating their famous paintings in miniature on eyelids! You certainly recognize Starry Night above. Also check out Atupe's version of Monet' s Water Lilies below.

"When I posted the peacock design onto twitter, a girl actually messaged me and said that it reminded her of a Van Gogh piece, and since I absolutely love Van Gogh I decided I would try out Starry Night," she continued.

"I then just sat down and spent a good hour and a half just recreating the look, slowly outlining it and developing the colours! It took really long as there's so many different colours, and I really wanted to try get all the same colours and patterns as in the original painting," Atupe continued.

Sad Dogs Outside Shops Look So Sad

Dogs have a knack for making people feel pity for them, and when a dog sets its sad eyes upon us, its head, tail and ears hanging low us it tugs at our heartstrings and makes us want to comfort the poor pooch.

For instance- dogs make the saddest face in the world when they're left outside while their human goes inside a store, creating sadorable moments ready to be caught on camera.

The "Sad Dogs Outside Shops" Facebook page chronicles the plight of those poor abandoned and deprived dogs whose cruel owners leave them out in the cold, so we can all pity their sad, sad lives.

Let's Talk About Sleep, Baby

Posted: 22 Jan 2017 07:59 AM PST

During a fight with my partner the other night, it occurred to me the other day that there are three types of sleepers: those who have to sleep with music or television on, those who can't sleep with music or television on, and those that don't care either way. And those that don't care either way seem to be able to fall asleep no matter what's going on.

For partners where one person who can't sleep with music or TV on and one person has to, bedtime can become tricky, so I want to know how you readers with the same problem deal with it. How do you compromise when one person can only do things one way and the other can only do things the other? And just for fun, answer our poll and we'll get a better idea of which sleeping habit is the most common.

POLL: Do you have to watch TV or listen to music when you go to sleep?

  • Yes
  • No
  • It doesn't matter, I can sleep either way

Lighthouse Volunteer Position Open

Posted: 22 Jan 2017 05:59 AM PST

Talk about getting away from it all! The Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service is seeking a couple of new volunteer lighthouse keepers for Maatsuyker Island, ten kilometers of the coast of western Tasmania. The lighthouse is automated, so volunteers would spend six months monitoring a weather station, observing wildlife, and mowing the grass. Two people, all alone. And the conditions won't be what you're used to. There's a landline, but it doesn't always work well, and you'll have no internet. And Maatsuyker Island is notoriously colder than the rest of Australia. From the application form:

Volunteers are responsible for providing their own food, clothing, entertainment, bedding and other personal items.  The Parks and Wildlife Service will provide transport by helicopter for these items between Hobart and Maatsuyker Island.  Transport space is limited to 325 kg per person, (for 6 month stay).

The Parks and Wildlife Service  will also provide one resupply helicopter visit at approximately 3 months in (i.e. one resupply in the standard 6 month stay), often to coincide with scheduled or unplanned maintenance.   Space on the resupply flight will also be limited. Caretakers generally make their own arrangements for the preparation of food and other goods for resupply. Please note PWS prefer people take as many of the supplies as possible onto Maatsuyker in the beginning, so that the resupply can be primarily for fresh food and mail.  There is a vegetable garden maintained by the caretakers for fresh food.

Electricity is supplied by a generating system incorporating solar and back up diesel. The high cost of transport dictates that gas and diesel consumption on the island be kept to a minimum.

Volunteers must go through a training program and be certified in First Aid and Marine Radio Operation, and demonstrate competency in other skills. The application is available through the Park Service. The application deadline is January 30th.  -via Metafilter
