| 13 Geeky Engagement Ring Boxes Posted: 24 Jan 2017 01:59 AM PST If you love someone enough to propose, then you may as well make that proposal special. So if your little lady (or gentleman) is a bit of a geek, then a nerdy ring box is a great way to seal the deal with a little loving flair. Here are a few of the best dorky ring boxes we've seen online. Golden SnitchGeeky ring box sculptor Paul Pape has dozens of amazing designs on his Tumblr page -and this golden snitch is a perfect way to propose to any Harry Potter fan. BB-8Paul Pape isn't the only noted ring box sculptor out there. The Model Maker is also quite gifted and this BB-8 design proves it. PokeballThis great box by Gadget4Entertainment is actually part of a set for the hardcore Pokemon lover and both the ring and box are impeccable. The HobbitLike the Pokeball, this cool ring box by QuanticLaser comes with a matching One Ring inside -plus it features all kinds of fun surprises like a glow-in-the-dark rune and a hidden map. MonopolyRedditor Justin Lebon hired Etsy seller OldRedwood to make him this custom Monopoly game board for his wedding proposal. He used a loaded pair of dice that only rolled sevens to ensure his girlfriend landed on Chance and would get the custom card he made sure was on top of the deck. The card said "Will you marry me? If yes, advance to Luxury Tax" and that's where the secret compartment with the ring was hiding. Donkey KongPropose to your Player Two with GeekMana's classic Donkey Kong statue that holds a special barrel that holds an engagement ring. Beauty and the BeastAny book lover would be proud to say "yes" to their prince if he proposed with this stunning design by Paul Pape. Monsters, Inc.What Pixar fan could say "no" to adorable Mike Wazowski? Especially when he is holding an engagement ring and a flower thanks to The Model Maker. Arc ReactorEddie Zarick's girlfriend's loves Iron Man, so when he proposed, he used his impressive DIY skills to make her this light-up arc reactor engagement ring box. TARDISAnother Paul Pape design, this TARDIS may not actually be larger on the inside, but it sure looks like it is. PortalThis companion cube by MazuirRossArt is a great way to propose -but you're going to have to expect all of your gamer friends to make jokes that the wedding cake is a lie. D20Roll a critical hit on your loved one's heart with this awesome box by 3DCentral. Bioshock Loot BoxThis Borderlands loot box by Paul Pape contains the most legendary loot of all. Did any of you readers use a special engagement ring box, or did you let the jewelry do the talking for you? | ||||||||
| Owner Discovers Heartwarming Note Attached To Her Cat's Collar Posted: 23 Jan 2017 11:59 PM PST Pet cats who are allowed to go outside often become acquainted with their human neighbors as they survey their kingdom, hanging out at various pads and scoring free food and pettings. These cats usually wear a collar while they're outside, showing the neighbors that the cat they're feeding and petting has an owner nearby, but the collar can also act as a way for neighbors to communicate. Imgur user SliceofToast discovered a strange note attached to her cat Nala's collar after Nala had come in from her daily patrol of the neighborhood. The note said "Please Read", so SliceofToast opened it up and discovered the note wasn't so strange after all, just a pleasant sign of affection for a furry frequent visitor. She must live in a nice neighborhood, because my neighbors were always trying to either steal my cats or run them over! -Via Honest to Paws | ||||||||
| ᚼᛒ: Harald Bluetooth and Your Phone Posted: 23 Jan 2017 09:59 PM PST Have you ever wondered why your Bluetooth is called that, and where that symbol came from? Me neither, even when mine stopped working this morning. But it's a fascinating story, as told here by Tom Scott. You have to admit, Bluetooth sounds better than "lower power RF," which is what it could have been. And now, because they named the system Bluetooth, you know a little more about Scandinavian history. Commenters also added that in Sweden, your wireless communication is called Blåtand because that's how they spelled Harald's name. -via reddit | ||||||||
| We're in Love With These T-Rex Engagement Photos Posted: 23 Jan 2017 07:59 PM PST There are some really beautiful engagement photos out there, but let's face it -most of them are pretty similar. A couple holding hands and kissing in a pretty setting is nothing new, but these photos by wedding photographers Greg Basel and Maria Adams prove you haven't seen everything yet. The dinosaurs themselves aren't a real couple, they are just friends of the photographers -but the photographers themselves are a happily married couple, so that's something. It's certainly a clever marketing tactic. You can see the whole set at the photographer's website. Via Huffington Post | ||||||||

| Will Giraffe Milk Become The Latest Fad Superfood? Posted: 23 Jan 2017 05:59 PM PST It seems like a new superfood is announced every other week, and that word "superfood" rolls off the tongue so smoothly people can't wait to share what they've read about the latest "superfood". Say it a few times to yourself, see how fun it is to say because it makes your mouth form the "ooo" shape? You know who else has lips that can easily form the "ooo" shape? The tall and lanky giraffe, that's who, and while they're pretty super as far as animals go they're not considered a superfood, not even by the lions and hyenas who occasionally dine on them. On the other hand, their milk may be sold as a superfood in the future because, according to this zoological report from 1962, it's better for us than cow's milk:
It's unlikely giraffe milk will make it into your local supermarket's dairy aisle anytime soon, even if only because giraffes won't just stand around and let humans milk them like cows. But it is interesting to think about the odd food products that'll become normalized in the future, and how food fads drive people to eat the strangest stuff! | ||||||||
| Posted: 23 Jan 2017 03:59 PM PST The Golden Raspberry Awards, affectionately known as the Razzies, salute the worst movies of the year. The awards are bestowed the night before the Academy Awards. They usually nominate five movies in each category, but 2016 was particularly awful, so there are six each this year. Zoolander 2 leads with nine nominations, while Batman v Superman received eight nominations. And the nominees for worst picture are:

| Beautiful Waterfalls From Around the World Posted: 23 Jan 2017 01:59 PM PST There are so many beautiful places in the world and waterfalls tend to always be on that list. Over on Travel and Leisure, you can see some of the most beautiful waterfalls in the world. Tall and short, wide and thin, slow and fast, there are all kinds of waterfalls on the list, but each one is amazing in its own wonderful way. For example, the Iguazu Falls in Argentina (just above) is made up of 275 individual falls that stretch across two miles of rainforest cliffs. Meanwhile, the Akaka Falls in Hawaii (top) is more than twice as tall as Niagra Falls. You can check out the rest of the waterfalls over at Travel and Leisure | ||||||||
| These Wolverine Knockoffs Are The Second Best There Is At What They Do Posted: 23 Jan 2017 11:59 AM PST Wolverine is (arguably) the most successful knockoff character of all time, largely because the fine folks at Marvel worked hard to set their character apart from Lone Wolf/Timber Wolf, the DC character that inspired Wolvie. However, the company's overuse of the character in the 80s and 90s led to an overabundance of knockoff characters created for storylines involving Wolverine, such as Shiv, Wild Child, Daken, Romulus and Wild Thing. Since Wild Thing and Daken are technically Wolvie's kids they don't really count as knockoffs, but Shiv is the spitting image of Logan without the mask and has one claw on each hand instead of three. But any savage comic character can be considered akin to Wolverine, so the feral characters Wild Child and Romulus, and the Liefeld character Feral for that matter, share that connection to him. In fact, both Wild Child and Romulus are said to have a genetic connection to wolves, which conveniently brings us back to Timber Wolf... | Star Wars: The Last Jedi Posted: 23 Jan 2017 09:59 AM PST The official name of the eighth episode of the Star Wars saga (which many are now calling 'the Skywalker saga') has been announced: Star Wars: The Last Jedi. We already figured that the movie would revolve around the aged Jedi master Luke Skywalker, and maybe we can assume that is who the title refers to. Or maybe not. No matter what happens in the film, we will all cry for Leia. The film is scheduled to hit theaters on December 15th, 2017. We'll have the first trailer as soon as it's available. -via Laughing Squid | ||||||||
| KFC Beijing is Introducing Facial Recognition Ordering Posted: 23 Jan 2017 08:59 AM PST Are you afraid of future technologies using facial recognition software to track your every movement and action? Then you might want to avoid visiting a KFC in Beijing, where you the company has started to employ facial-recognition software to decide what you want to order. It's not as scary as it sounds though, the restaurant isn't really using full facial recognition. Instead, the software will identify the visitor's age and sex, as well as other factors like the weather and time of day to estimate what that customer will want to order. For example, a male customer in his 20s ordering in the afternoon on a warm day might want a popcorn chicken combo, while an older female in her 40s ordering in on a chilly morning want poridge (which they sell in Beijing). Of course, that doesn't mean the technology won't help push forward the scary kind of facial recognition, so it might be best to avoid anyway. | The Dark Side Of Star-Lord You Never Hear About Posted: 23 Jan 2017 07:59 AM PST For many of us, the Marvel movie Guardians of the Galaxy was the first time we encountered Star-Lord, the leader of the Guardians and an all-around relatable hero with a sense of humor. But the character has a history in Marvel Comics that you might be surprised to know. Character creator Steve Englehart had a long-term vision for Star-Lord that went by the wayside when he left the company. Then things got weird as other writers took over the comic book character, and Star-Lord moved to TV, video games, and movies. Your understanding of Star-Lord might be changed by this video from Looper, but you can can look at him any way you want to. After all, it's fiction! -via TVOM | ||||||||
| Israeli Artist Shames Those Making Light of Berlin's Holocaust Memorial Posted: 23 Jan 2017 06:59 AM PST There's no single right way to behave at a Holocaust memorial, but as a general rule, visitors should be respectful -and practicing parkour, doing gymnastics, juggling and snapping selfies are all examples of disrespectful behavior. Unfortunately, Berlin's Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe by architect Peter Eisenman is constantly filled with tourists taking selfies, playing hide and go seek, and otherwise ignoring the somber nature of the site. Even EasyJet published an eight-page fashion editorial in their magazine that was shot in the memorial. That's why Israeli artist Shahak Shapira started showing how ugly and inappropriate these acts are by Photoshopping people's tasteless Facebook, Instagram, Tinder and Grindr photos into actual pictures of the Holocaust. The results are ugly and unpleasant, but they show exactly how callous the behavior of those in the images are. The project is called Yolocaust and Shapira made sure to include the number of likes each photo has to remind us that the people shooting the images aren't the only ones at fault. Of course, those who find themselves on the page can get their images removed by emailing the highly appropriate address undouche.me@yolocaust.de. Meanwhile, you can see pictures of those tasteless people satired for their behavior on the Yolocaust website. Via Tablet | ||||||||
| The Hidden Room Behind Mount Rushmore Posted: 23 Jan 2017 05:59 AM PST Sculptor Gutzon Borglum was responsible for the monument to four presidents carved into Mount Rushmore in South Dakota. The project took 14 years to complete, but Borglum had another idea to ensure the history of his work: to carve an accessible museum into the rock, an archive to house all the information about the monument. He called it the Hall of Records.
And there is a hall carved from the rock behind Mount Rushmore -but you can't go there. Read what happened to the Hall of Records at mental_floss. |
