Teenage Photographer Captures Life In Hong Kong In The 1950s

Posted: 28 Jan 2017 03:59 AM PST

Street photography is nothing like shooting in the studio, because you're capturing life in the moment and shooting from a bystander's perspective with no control over the scene.

And if your photos capture an important era in a city's history then you become part of that history, an accidental historian sharing what you saw with the world.

Photographer Fan Ho came to Hong Kong from Shanghai in 1949, and the twelve-year-old shutter bug immediately became infatuated with his new home, which had recently returned to British rule.

Things were changing in Hong Kong, as a city once left in the past experienced a period of rapid industrialization and became a major metropolitan center, and Fan was there to capture images of life in the city during its transformation.

Fan's street photos from the 50s and 60s are known collectively as Hong Kong Yesterday, an up close look at life in the city which Fan masterfully photographed and developed in the family bath tub.

Log Lady by Taylor Rose

She knew that her services would be needed in Twin Peaks once again, and that the death of Laura Palmer was just the beginning of the show, because her log had told her so. And still they ignored Margaret's words of wisdom, dismissed her visions and laughed at her because she served as a mouthpiece for a mystic log....until it was too late to turn back. Agent Cooper took note of her announcements, and he knew that her words, strange as they were, rang true. But the Log Lady left the land of the living feeling like Twin Peak's big joke, turning her into yet another restless spirit waiting to get revenge on those who made her feel unwanted...

Rogue One as 8-bit Cinema

Posted: 27 Jan 2017 11:59 PM PST

Those who care at all about Star Wars should have seen the movie Rogue One already, but in case you haven't, this video contains some spoilers. It's Cinefix's 8-Bit Cinema remake that turns the movie into an old-style video game. And you don't even have to control it!

This is cute, but I must say that it's no substitute for seeing the film in its entirety. -via Geeks Are Sexy

Epic Movie Sets That Were Actually Miniature Models

Posted: 27 Jan 2017 09:59 PM PST

When filmmakers shoot epic movies they use every trick in the book to make the characters and locations look larger than life on the big screen, using compositing and perspective tricks to fool audiences.

In fact, the sets used on your favorite epic movies are often small enough to fit in your living room.

Okay, so the Minas Tirith model from The Lord Of The Rings: The Return of the King wouldn't fit in your living room unless you have really, really high ceilings, but Sauron's Tower certainly would!

The grand hotel featured in Wes Anderson's The Grand Budapest Hotel wasn't such a grand structure after all in real world terms, but in terms of model making it's a magnificent miniature masterpiece!

And who can forget those far out aerial views of New York seen in John Carpenter's Escape From New York, which were actually shots of a few different models of the city.

This highly detailed cityscape was constructed out of wood and cardboard by The Skotaks, to be used in flyover shots.

Carpenter also used a wireframe model made by Mark Stetson to cheat those computer screen shots, don't you love it when practical effects are used to imitate CGI?!

David Bowie's First TV Appearance

Posted: 27 Jan 2017 07:59 PM PST

In 1964, David Bowie (then David Jones) was the 17-year-older leader of the band The Manish Boys. To gain publicity, his father came up with a stunt. They concocted an organization called the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Long-Haired Men. That garnered the band an appearance on the BBC show Tonight.

Here is that show from November 1964. It's good to see Bowie as an everyday longhaired British teenager. If the host had known where young David's career would take him, he would have been even more scandalized. -via Boing Boing

These Super Mario Comics From EXTRALIFE Explain Everything

Posted: 27 Jan 2017 05:59 PM PST

(Image Link)

On the surface the story behind Super Mario Bros. seems pretty normal- moustachioed plumbers raised by egg laying dinosaurs save princess from a giant mutated turtle with a Donkey Kong complex.

Mario and his brother squash mutant mushrooms, turtles, fish and other fairly normal looking animals, but things start to get strange in the Mushroom Kingdom every time they battle ghosts and other supernatural creatures.

It's like the game designers just gave up on realism and decided to get weird with it when they created creatures like Boo, I mean, who the heck is that body shape based on?

There's a simple and obvious explanation to all the strangeness that occurs in the Super Mario Bros. franchise, as shown here in this EXTRALIFE comic by Scott Johnson.

Watch These Guys Shoot Stuff With Glass Shotgun Slugs

Posted: 27 Jan 2017 01:59 PM PST

Shotgun slugs aren't really in need of an upgrade, and considering there are so many different types of rounds available it seems more constructive to improve existing ammo rather than creating anything new.

But YouTuber TAOFLEDERMAUS isn't making videos for the sake of progress- they're just having a blast making shotgun ammo out of whatever their viewer's suggest, like Silly Putty.

Silly Putty may not work as an effective shotgun shell filling, but these glass slugs made by Subconscious Design are terrifyingly effective!

7 Strange Mysteries of World War One

Posted: 27 Jan 2017 11:59 AM PST

We study the big wars of history, but there will always be things we don't know due to the chaos, death, and destruction all wars bring. Records and witnesses are hard to come by even in recent wars, but World War I was 100 years ago. Things we don't know about the Great War will most likely forever be shrouded in mystery. One of the more shocking of these mysteries is the case of Béla Kiss.

Béla Kiss was a Hungarian tinsmith who marched off to war in 1914. He left his home in the care of his housekeeper, along with his collection of seven giant metal drums. Townsfolk knew that he had been collecting gasoline in anticipation of wartime rationing, and when gasoline was needed, they cracked open the drums. Instead of gasoline, they were met by the stench of death.

A search of Kiss’ property revealed 24 dead bodies, 23 women and a man, who had been strangled and pickled in alcohol. Further investigation uncovered a secret room and stacks of letters between Kiss and 74 different women. Police discovered that he had defrauded countless women and had even been taken to court. They issued an arrest warrant for Kiss. He was almost apprehended in a Serbian hospital in October of 1916, but escaped at the last minute.

From there, Kiss vanished. Rumours circulated about a French Foreign Legion soldier who used his alias (Hoffman) and boasted about strangling people). Another alleged sighting occurred in New York City. But Béla Kiss’ fate – and his story in general – remains one of the more sinister mysteries of World War One. It’s also likely that not all of his victims were found.

That's one mystery that may never be solved. There are others, some with a glimmer of hope, that you can read about at Urban Ghosts.

This Five-Year-Old's Trick For Tying Shoes Is Going Viral

Posted: 27 Jan 2017 09:59 AM PST

Everybody remembers learning how to tie their shoes as a kid because it's one of the earliest motor skill related tricks we learn during childhood, and for some it was a real pain in the foot to learn.

Heck, I knew a kid who wore shoes with a velcro closure until middle school because he had such a hard time learning how to properly tie his shoes, and he still hates wearing laced shoes to this day.

Well, if my buddy had a friend like Colton Lillard, or more specifically a friend like Colton's friend River, he would have loved laced shoes for life!

Colton's shoe tying trick video has over 11 million views to date, and hopefully he'll make a follow- up video with his fabled friend River.

The Secret History of the First Cat in Space

Posted: 27 Jan 2017 08:59 AM PST

The Soviets sent the dog Laika and other animals into space before humans. NASA sent chimpanzees into space to pave the way for astronauts. The French, a little behind the superpowers, sent a cat into space.

On October 18th, 1963, the Centre national d’études in France was set to send a small cat named Félix into space. After lagging behind its Soviet and American competitors, France was eager to stake its claim in the space race—with cats, for some reason. But on launch day, the mischievous little beast went missing—and an accidental heroine stepped in to take his place. Her name was Félicette.

From the streets of Paris, this tuxedo kitty—nicknamed “Astrocat”—would reach heights never achieved by feline kind. On October 24th, 1963, Félicette jetted 130 miles above Earth on a liquid-fueled French Véronique AG1 rocket, soaring high above the Algerian Sahara Desert. She returned just fifteen minutes later, already a decorated heroine for her nation.

This Glass Doorknob Caused a House Fire

Posted: 27 Jan 2017 07:59 AM PST

You probably already know that you can start a fire by focusing beams of light -the same way a magnifying glass can be used to burn insects. But it's easy to forget that concept while buying home accents and one home owner found that out the hard way when sunlight hit her glass doorknob just right and caught her house on fire.

Fortunately, the family was home at the time and was able to put the blaze out quickly and safely. Read more about the incident here.

Masters Of The Playground - That Kid Needs To Get More Sun!

Posted: 27 Jan 2017 06:59 AM PST

Masters of the Playground by Ed Harrington

People often wonder where the animosity between He-Man and Skeletor began, since they've been at each other's throats for as long as anyone can remember, so here's a little history lesson for the curious. It all began on the playground at Eternia Elementary School, when young Skeletor was bullied by a super strong little kid named He-Boy. Young Skeletor was a big fan of those rocking horse type things on the playground, and he would sit there for hours gently rocking back and forth. One day He-Boy decided to play a little trick on Skeletor by winding the spring super tight, so whoever sat on it next would launch straight into the air. Long story short- Skeletor didn't notice the spring, sat on the thing and went flying through the air which, by the way, is the first time he yelled "MYAH!" too...

Share the untold story of the MOTU bunch with this Masters Of The Playground t-shirt by Ed Harrington, it's the playful way to show the world what your favorite skull-faced villain looked like as a little tyke!

Shrek Movie References

Posted: 27 Jan 2017 06:59 AM PST

The Shrek movies tickled our fancies for a lot of reasons, but one reason was the many callbacks to other famous films. The Dreamsworks production referenced all the top Disney films, and slipped in scenes that reminded us of classic non-animated films, too. Possibly more of them than you realized.

In this video, Bora Barroso collected as many of these references as he could and show them to us side-by-side. There's a list of them at the vimeo page. -via TVOM

The Best Dessert From Every State

Posted: 27 Jan 2017 05:59 AM PST

Everyone has their own favorite dessert, but there are just some places that everyone rants about. Since you probably aren't going to go around trying every dessert in your entire state though, even with local favorites, you likely won't find the best dessert on your own.

Fortunately, Livingly managed to find the best dessert in every state by looking at reviews on Trip Advisor, Yelp, restaurant websitees and more. The ones seen above are from the Humungous Banana Split from The Poky Dot, West Virginia and the Peanut Butter Push Pop at Citizen Public House in Scottsdale, Arizona. So find out what your state's favorite dessert is here -and feel free to disagree with their choices in the comments.
