| Behold the Shimmering Beauty of Iran's Glass Mosque Posted: 31 Jan 2017 03:59 AM PST Imagine stained glass reflected by a disco mirror ball, and that's only the beginning of what you can expect from Shah Cheragh, which means "King of the Light." The walls and ceilings are covered with glass and mirror tiles that shimmer and shine as you walk by. Shiny! The mosque was built as a mausoleum in Shiraz, Iran, and was later fitted with an interior designed to magnify any light passing through. -via Atlas Obscura | ||||||||

| A Delightfully Wrong Geek Valentine's Day Card Posted: 30 Jan 2017 11:59 PM PST We already featured a whole collection of great geeky Valentine's Day cards, but I didn't discover this design by Josh Cullen until almost a week later. It was so good, I just had to share it with the rest of you. Josh's Etsy shop is full of great geeky art outside of his amazing Valentine's Day card. This Chewbacca Big Foot design is just one example, and you can see the rest of it here. | ||||||||
| The Restaurant with No Kitchen Posted: 30 Jan 2017 09:59 PM PST At some restaurants, you sit down and they cook you some food. At others, you pick up the food and take it home. Now there's a restaurant in Helsinki that turns that idea on its ear. Take In doesn't even have a kitchen, but you sit down to eat take out food ordered from any of 20 other restaurants.
It sounds like a fancier version of what we'd call a food court. Read more about this odd concept in dining at Eater. -Thanks, John Farrier!
| A Huge Collection Of Really Cool Tattoos Dedicated To Dogs Posted: 30 Jan 2017 07:59 PM PST People looking for a lasting way to pay tribute to their beloved pet often get a tattoo with their name or likeness, so that pet will be with them for the rest of their lives. This is a really sweet way to remember a pet you've loved and lost, but the ink memorial can have the opposite effect on you if the artist does a crappy job of rendering your dear pet's likeness. But we're not here to dwell on bad tats, we're here to check out some really cool body art dedicated to good dogs both alive and gone to that great big dog park in the sky. (Image Link) If you like tattoos this collection will inspire you, if you like dogs this list will probably touch you, but if you hate dogs and tattoos then I suggest watching Benji with your local tattoo artist! | ||||||||
| Welcome To The Jungle - I Wanna Watch You Bleed Posted: 30 Jan 2017 05:59 PM PST Welcome to the Jungle by Nihat Gokcen Welcome to the jungle, we've got jeep rides and....wait, is that a raptor? What the hell kinda theme park is this?! You're telling me there are actual living dinosaurs in here? What's stopping them from having us all for lunch? Apparently they weren't lying when they named this place Jurassic Park, but from the looks of it their security system isn't doing a very good job of keeping the guests safe from the dinosaurs. Why do I say that? Because that raptor over there has blood on its maw... Celebrate your favorite dinosaur-themed movie franchise in style with this Welcome To The Jungle t-shirt by Nihat Gokcen, it's sure to make people grin like a raptor wherever you go! Visit Nihat Gokcen's Facebook fan page, official website, Twitter and Instagram, then head on over to his NeatoShop for more dino-riffic designs:

| Pictures Found on a Brooklyn Street Posted: 30 Jan 2017 05:59 PM PST Six years ago, Annie Correal found a discarded photo album on her Brooklyn street. It contained snapshots of a black couple in New York in the 1940s, '50s, and '60s, but the notes gave little information as to their identities. She held on to the album, but as time passed, Correal knew that time was running out on finding who the pictures belonged to.
Through knocking on doors, searching public records, and traveling to North Carolina, Correal pieced together the story of Etta Mae and Isaiah Taylor and their experiences in World War II, Harlem nightlife, and the changing demographics of New York City. She even found out why the album was thrown out. Read about the project and the people she found at the New York Times. -via Metafilter
| Awesome Fan Art Imagines Alternate Scenes From Original Star Wars Trilogy Posted: 30 Jan 2017 03:59 PM PST (Alternate Opening To A New Hope by Morgan Yon) Alternative facts aren't cool, and they will never replace cold, hard facts, but alternate takes on our favorite pop culture franchises are often cool enough to take on a life of their own. For instance, these fan art pieces depicting alternate scenes from the original Star Wars trilogy are cool enough to be used as concept art on a project, but the artists didn't create them for use in a film. (The Final Test by Markus Stadlober) They were submissions for the ILM ART Department Challenge, hosted by Industrial Light & Magic, Wacom and ArtStation, and each piece tells a compelling tale we'll never get to see on the big screen. (Image by Matt Rhodes) These alternate artworks were created within a strict set of guidelines, in order to give the artists a taste of what it would feel like to work for ILM as a concept artist:

| Tomislav Jagnjić's Artwork with Humorous Titles Posted: 30 Jan 2017 01:59 PM PST
Serbian artist Tomislav Jagnjić creates lovely digital artwork of science fiction and fantasy scenes, and then gives them hilariously subversive titles.
You can see more of these at his web gallery. Hovering over an image will give you its title. I think there's an implied permission to use these images from the Facebook comments.

| World Of Warcraft Themed Cooking Show Launches In South Korea Posted: 30 Jan 2017 11:59 AM PST World of Warcraft adaptations are an inevitable byproduct of the game's success, and so far the board games, movie, comic books, etc. that have come out make perfect sense for the franchise. But South Korea has taken their love of WoW in an odd new direction- by creating the first ever World of Warcraft themed cooking show. The show is called "Wow! Recipe? The Meal Is Ready", it's hosted by celebrity chef Choi Hyun-seok, an avid Warcraft player, and it debuted on January 20th. It's hard to tell where Warcraft fits into the show from the clip, but according to GameAbout "Choi a known WoW player, will cook dishes like 'Hell Hound Sweet and Sour Fish' and 'Murloc Soup' while guests share stories from and about the game." Nothing says "Mmmmm!" like Murloc! -Via endgadget | ||||||||
| Corpse of Famous Weasel on Display Posted: 30 Jan 2017 09:59 AM PST Last fall, a weasel failed to read the warning signs and crossed a fence guarding CERN's Large Hadron Collider. The stone marten was immediately zapped with 18,000 volts, and the incident shut down the collider temporarily. Now the corpse of that hapless creature is on display in an exhibition called Dead Animal Tales at the Natural History Museum in Rotterdam, Netherlands. The exhibit looks at animals that died due to circumstances caused by humans, one way or another. Kees Moeliker is the director of the museum.
Yes, that's where you know the name Kees Moeliker. Read more about the Dead Animal Tales exhibit at The Guardian. -via Gizmodo

| Vintage Auto Ads from the Soviet Union Posted: 30 Jan 2017 07:59 AM PST The Soviet Union produced millions vehicles every year in the 1950s and '60s. In a collection of advertisements for them, there are some that border on fine art, like the art deco poster above. Then there are some that just invite mockery, like ads of the era from all over the world. Consider this ad for the Ukrainian LuAZ 969-M. It's supposed to evoke an image of the hardy outdoorsman, as he drives his LuAZ into the wilderness for a day of hunting. The wild boar is obviously pasted in, but they carved him a path in the snow to indicate his location. Or did they? The model, who isn't what you'd expect of a typical hunter of the Soviet Union, has no idea where to point the gun. Maybe he didn't really want to field dress a boar that day. You'll find a wide variety of styles in the roundup of Soviet car ads at Vintage Everyday. -via the Presurfer | ||||||||

| Our 9,000-Year Love Affair With Booze Posted: 30 Jan 2017 05:59 AM PST Evidence of alcoholic beverages goes back at least 9,000 years, and we may eventually find evidence even older. Even before that, our primate ancestors were attracted to fermented fruit for its good qualities: calories, easy digestion, and the good feeling it gave them. Historians once considered alcohol as just another consumable, but it's becoming more clear that alcohol was one of the driving forces behind a lot of developments and upheavals of human civilization.
Alcohol had a big role in the rise of agriculture and communities, then trade, then war. Read what we we know about the role of alcohol in human history at National Geographic. -via Digg |
