Some Important Questions From the Mailbag

Connections

Here's something you may not know about duct tape... it's absolutely lousy on duct work. That's because it was never designed for duct work. In fact, despite today's common belief, it was originally dubbed "duck tape." That's because it was developed during World War II as a way to help the Army waterproof its ammo boxes. And despite the fact that it's a product that has somehow become synonymous with manliness (we disagree, by the way), it was invented by a woman - Vesta Stoudt.

We talk a lot about the power of Connections. They're a vital part of our Triad.

The folks we know can lead us to new opportunities. They support us. And they teach us new things.

Without our Connections, we're nothing.

That's why we're digging into our mailbag today and hearing from (and answering) readers. What they have to say may just teach us all a thing or two.

Our first question starts like many others...

Enjoy your newsletter. I put off subscribing because I'm a woman, but when I subscribed, I decided that was silly.

I tried searching your website to find the article that mentioned the use of purifying water tablets - plus it had some other survival tool ideas. I reread everything that came up: food, water, power. But I still haven't found what you said that clicked at the time. I didn't save the idea. I apologize that I can't be more specific. Any ideas are appreciated. - Jackie H.

Thanks for the kind words, Jackie. First off, you've stumbled onto an idea that many readers find fascinating. Just because Manward Press is aimed at men doesn't mean it's only for men. Far from it. We like to brag that we're "feminist approved."

When we boil away all the pressures of society and our modern culture, we all have the same struggles and goals. That's why our Triad works equally well for men and women. While we aim for men - because that's who we know best - many of our readers are women. Perhaps they, too, want to know what it means to be a good, fulfilled man.

As for the article on purifying water, here are links to two that may be what you're looking for. Click here and here.

But you may also be referring to a recent Rooster's Crow segment about purifying water. Because it's a feature that lives only in the e-letter, a search on our website won't reveal it.

Here it is:

Bleach is a simple and effective way to treat water from a natural source. But too much of the stuff can hurt you and not enough won't get the job done. Here's a simple trick to remember how much bleach you'll need. Just tell yourself... you must be 21 to drink. It's a phrase we all know and the numbers tell us everything we need. For every one quart of water... add two drops of bleach. Simple.

Believe it or not, women like men who know how to fix anything. I fixed the ice maker in my neighbor's refrigerator. Now I'm the hero and got a new girlfriend. - Michael S.

Good to hear, Michael. Attaboy.

It's not obvious at first, but this is more evidence of the power of our Triad. Remember, we focus everything we do on Liberty, Connections and Know-How. Combined, they lead men to fulfilled, successful lives.

But possessing these traits doesn't just make us happy... it makes those around us happy. After all, if we're truly fulfilled, it oozes out of us.

Plus, who doesn't want a friend who can save us some cash?

Good morning, Andy. I read with interest every issue of your Manward e-magazine. Keep them coming!

I agreed with most of what you wrote about tools, but there are a couple of very essential tools one should always keep in a toolbox: duct tape and especially silicone self-fusing repair tape. The latter is perfect for emergency repairs for automotive, plumbing and marine applications. It will withstand 950 psi operating pressure and a temperature range of -85 to +500 degrees F.

Don't leave home without them! - Eugene L.

Thanks, Eugene. I must admit, I've used plenty of duct tape in my day - too much, probably.

But, while I'm familiar with it, I have never used silicone tape... and there's none in my toolbox. You can bet that's a statement I won't be able to make for much longer.

The tape is unique because it doesn't stick to anything... it bonds to itself. The tighter you pull it or squeeze it, the greater the bond. You can wrap it around a cruddy radiator hose or a copper pipe that's sprung a leak.

The stuff is not cheap, but I agree that a roll or two should find a spot in every toolbox.

Here's a picture Eugene sent.

Do you include NPR as part of the dysfunctional media? I do not. - Steve P.

I disagree, Steve.

NPR is absolutely part of the dysfunctional media. It's disguised a bit better, but listen long enough or close enough and you'll know what the organization stands for.

It's not NPR's fault, though. It's simply the way the mainstream does business.

The group knows who its supporters are and caters its news to them. If it wants to stay on the air, it has no other choice.

But like I've said before, most of this political stuff is just noise... noise that we should ignore. It's flat-out unhealthy to get too involved.

Listen if you want, but know there's always much more to the story.

I read your article on "The Perfect Drink." The question I have: What time of day should this drink be consumed, first thing in the morning before breakfast, or does it not matter when, to do the most good? - Frank B.

There's no wrong time to drink some haymaker punch. But because of its sugar content and the fact that it gives you a solid, long-lasting burst of energy, I recommend having a glass with breakfast. Or have some just before lunch as a midmorning pick-me-up.

And, as always, you can share your thoughts, send your comments or ask a question by emailing me at mailbag@manwardpress.com.

Be well,

Andy
