As Salaamu Alaykum Indiana,
Since Trump signed the executive order last Friday putting his Muslim ban into place, we've seen a massive rejection of his hateful policies. This weekend, tens of thousands of everyday people turned out in cities across the country1 in protest of Trump's policy that's caused chaos and disorder all over the world.
Here's another way we can push back: Rex Tillerson—the former Exxon CEO who is Trump's nominee for Secretary of State—is scheduled for a Senate confirmation vote tonight and we can call on our senators to halt the process.
During his confirmation hearing, Tillerson refused to condemn the idea of a Muslim registry, dodging the question by saying he "would need to have a lot more information"2 about whether the government should force people to register based on their religion.
Well, we don't need to "have a lot more information" about where Tillerson stands on Trump's Muslim ban. His silence this weekend and his reluctance to condemn a registry make it clear enough. We have to do whatever we can to stop or slow this man from becoming Secretary of State.
With the Trump administration leaning further into autocracy by the day, it can be tempting to just throw our hands up in despair.
But the human impact of these policies is real—and it's heartbreaking. We've heard reports of children being held for hours, families separated without contact, and even an attempted suicide by a woman in New York facing deportation.3
Call your senators now and let's keep using all the leverage points we have to reverse Trump's Muslim ban—and to stop Rex Tillerson, who would oversee the ban's implementation.
Click here to get the numbers for your senators and then let us know how the calls went.
In solidarity,
Linda, Dustin, Mark, Mohammad, and the MPower Change team
