“Big Business’ Dream Justice”

Scalia 2.0
February 01, 2017
"Big Business' Dream Justice"
After much anticipation (read: tweeting), Trump announced his nominee to fill Justice Antonin Scalia's seat on the Supreme Court in a Bachelor-style reveal last night. Trump's nominee, Judge Neil Gorsuch is Scalia 2.0, a.k.a. an extreme conservative who promises to put Trump's radical agenda and wealthy special interests ahead of pretty much everything else.
Gorsuch made a name for himself as one of the judges who sided with Hobby Lobby and other employers in their attempt to limit their employees' rights to birth control coverage. He has also repeatedly sided with big business over workers and consumers. Also shedding light on his potential future decisions: Gorsuch believes unelected judges should have more power to strike down federal regulations that protect workers, consumers, and the environment. More on his record here.
In the first days of his presidency, Trump has proven he has little regard for the constitution. So now more than ever, a Supreme Court Justice has to be up to the challenge of serving as a check on the other branches. If Judge Gorsuch isn't going to stand up against Trump and protect American values, the Senate should block his nomination. P.S. you might have seen "Why Liberals Should Back Neil Gorsuch" floating around the Internet, here's what that piece missed.
TRANSITION TRACKER
No rules. Appears to be the opinion of Republicans in the Senate as they rushed to push Trump's corrupt Cabinet through this morning. Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) changed the Senate Finance Committee's rules in order to advance Steven Mnuchin (for Treasury Secretary) and Rep. Tom Price (R-GA) (for Health and Human Services Secretary), despite the fact that they both allegedly lied in their committee hearings. Additionally, all Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee voted for Jeff Sessions to be Attorney General, despite his role in laying the groundwork for Trump's Muslim ban. All of these nominees advance to the floor vote, which is the last step before they are confirmed.
Boycotts. Are becoming a lifestyle as Senate Democrats on the Environmental and Public Works Committee are boycotting the committee vote to confirm Scott Pruitt as the Environmental Protection Agency Administrator. They are boycotting because Pruitt didn't provide answers about his record. This is the second day in a row with boycotts, as Democrats on the Finance Committee protested the Mnuchin and Price votes yesterday.
WHAT'S TRENDING
Standing Rock. Last night, while everyone was watching President Trump's The Apprentice: SCOTUS Edition Supreme Court pick, the acting secretary of the Army directed the Army Corps of Engineers to grant an easement to the Dakota Access pipeline, according to statements from Sen. John Hoeven and Rep. Kevin Cramer. This is basically rolling out the red carpet to build the pipeline that threatens sacred Standing Rock Sioux tribe land and endangers water for millions. The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe has vowed to keep fighting. Help them by commenting to the Army Corps of Engineers here.
Black History Month. Today marks the first day of Black History Month, a month commemorating Black history and the many contributions of Black Americans. With the Supreme Court as a topic of discussion, it's a good time to remember Thurgood Marshall, the first African-American Supreme Court Justice. Marshall was an incredible civil rights advocate who fought Jim Crow laws and argued 32 cases before the Supreme Court, including Brown v. Board of Education. Justice Marshall had a good message for both his and present time: "To protest against injustice is the foundation of all our American democracy."
FACT CHECK
Bad People with Bad Intentions. That's who the President claims he's keeping out of the country with his Muslim Ban (let's call it what it is). But just take a look at the people Trump doesn't want to let in: They include an Iraqi interpreter who served with the U.S. army for 10 years, a one-year-old boy with cancer, and a nine-year-old Somali with congenital heart disease. Add that to the fact that not one American has ever been killed in a terrorist attack in the United States by a national from the banned countries and you've got a full on, flat-out Trump lie.
UNDER THE RADAR
Domestic Abuse. It's no secret that Trump is Russia's best friend. But there are a lot of reasons—beyond the fact that Russia tampered with the U.S. election—why we cannot let Russia off the hook. The latest? Russia's parliament just voted 380-3 to approve a measure that would decriminalize domestic violence, a huge problem in Russia where roughly 36,000 women and 26,000 children are beaten by their partners or families every day.
ACTION OF THE DAY
#AntiLaborSecretary. Trump's pick for Labor Secretary Andrew Puzder will be voted on in committee this week. But Puzder is anti-worker, opposes the minimum wage, and blames low-wage workers for poverty, so we can't let him get through without a fight. Here's what you can do: click here and call 1-844-612-6113 to reach both of your senators. After you're connected to one of your senator's offices, tell whomever answers that you want the senator to vote NO on Andrew Puzder's confirmation as Secretary of Labor. Can't get through? Call their state office! Find local office numbers here.
GOOD NEWS
#BoycottStarbucks.#DrinkStarbucks Providing a small glimmer of hope in the darkness of 2017, big companies are stepping up to protect immigrant communities. Following universal outrage to the President Trump's Muslim Ban Starbucks announced that it will hire 10,000 refugees across the 75 countries it operates, joining a chorus of powerful business leaders taking a stand against the Trump Administration's anti-American values. Needless to say, the hashtag backfired.
