Thursday, Sept. 30 BRITNEY'S CASE GETS STRONGER A judge officially suspended Britney Spears' father as her conservator Wednesday, but the pop star's fight to regain control of her life and hold her father accountable isn't over yet. A hearing on the complete termination of her conservatorship is set for November. Meantime, her lawyer will likely be able to explore potential actions against Spears' father, James "Jamie" Spears. CONGRESS AVERTS ONE CRISIS WHILE PUTTING OFF ANOTHER The Senate is poised to approve legislation that would fund the federal government into early December, with the House likely to approve the measure following the Senate vote. Meanwhile, Democrats are struggling over how to get President Joe Biden's top domestic priorities over the finish line. [AP]
PROGRESSIVES SCORE A WIN House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) appeared to raise the bar for an infrastructure bill to move forward, delaying the vote in a win for progressive Democrats who want to see more work done on the Build Back Better budget bill before a vote on the infrastructure bill. TEXAS MAN WHO WAS NEARLY EXECUTED HAS CONVICTION OVERTURNED Clinton Young, who was sentenced to death in 2003 on charges of murdering two people, has had his conviction overturned by an appeals court because the prosecutor in his case, it turned out, was also on the payroll of the judge who presided over it. Young has always insisted he is innocent and he may now have another chance to prove it. [HuffPost]
UK OFFICER ACCUSED OF CITING COVID TO DETAIN SLAYING VICTIM London police officer Wayne Couzens handcuffed Sarah Everard on the pretext that she broke COVID-19 lockdown rules before he kidnapped and killed her, a prosecutor said. YOUTUBE FINALLY BANS ANTI-VACCINE CONTENT YouTube announced it is banning "harmful vaccine content" from the platform, a long-awaited shift that vastly expands its existing policy on medical misinformation. YouTube has banned some high-profile anti-vaccine channels, such as those of Joseph Mercola and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. [HuffPost]
SEN. KYRSTEN SINEMA EMERGES AS MAIN OBSTACLE TO BIDEN AGENDA Democrats are increasingly pointing a finger at Arizona Sen. Kyrsten Sinema as the major holdup to making progress on Biden's agenda, with sources close to the White House joining progressives in portraying Sinema as the primary obstacle to reaching a deal. Her opaqueness is now leading to open frustration among progressives and a quieter frustration among many moderate Democrats. [HuffPost]
LAWMAKERS SHARE THEIR ABORTION STORIES AHEAD OF HEARING Democratic Reps. Cori Bush (Mo.), Pramila Jayapal (Wash.) and Barbara Lee (Calif.) shared their abortion stories ahead of a congressional hearing today on access to the procedure, which is under increasing threat. "We've got to tell the truth about our experiences, so that we can come to the right policy solutions, and so that we can actually move us forward and not backwards," said Jayapal. [HuffPost]
