Determining how an industry is changing over time is critical when making business decisions. But how do you measure change over time accurately if the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) that the data are based on has changed? What if the city boundaries of the area you're interested in have expanded? In both cases, the economic growth could be real or inflated because the industry classification or geographic area is different.
