Wednesday, Oct. 6 DEFIANT ZUCKERBERG DEFENDS FACEBOOK Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg defended the company after a whistleblower testified before Congress about the harm of the social media giant's divisive content. He said that Frances Haugen's assertion that the company prioritizes "profit over safety and well-being" is "just not true," and that it was "very important" to him that "everything we build is good and safe for kids." WHISTLEBLOWER'S CLAIMS SUPPORTED BY INTERNAL RESEARCH In her testimony before a Senate subcommittee, Haugen provided tens of thousands of pages of internal Facebook research, which she previously gave to The Wall Street Journal. Haugen took senators' questions and made a compelling case for federal data privacy laws. "There's no one currently holding Mark accountable," she said, referring to Zuckerberg. [HuffPost]
BIDEN: NUCLEAR OPTION ON FILIBUSTER A 'REAL POSSIBILITY' President Joe Biden said there was a "real possibility" that Senate Democrats would move to change the body's filibuster rules in order to overcome Republicans' refusal to raise the debt ceiling and stave off a potential economic collapse if the federal government doesn't pay its bills. The off-the-cuff remarks are a notable shift in Biden's thinking. [HuffPost]
AUTHORITIES CONFIRM BODY BELONGS TO MISSING FLORIDA TEEN Human remains found in Orlando over the weekend belong to Miya Marcano, the 19-year-old college student who went missing last month, authorities confirmed. A cause of death has not been released. The last place Marcano was seen alive was the Arden Villas apartment complex in Orlando, where she worked and lived. [HuffPost]
WHAT'S BREWING
SENATE REPUBLICANS SHRUG OFF CANDIDATES WITH DOMESTIC VIOLENCE ALLEGATIONS Republicans could end up backing three candidates accused of domestic and sexual violence in key midterm Senate races in Missouri, Pennsylvania and Georgia next year. Some GOP strategists have quietly fretted that the accusations could drag down the party as it seeks to win back suburban women who have flocked to the Democratic Party since the beginning of the Trump era. [HuffPost]
CALIFORNIA GOV: OFFSHORE DRILLING 'PART OF OUR PAST' AFTER OIL SPILL Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) vowed to vehemently oppose any new drilling in federal waters off the state's coastline following a large oil spill that fouled some of the nation's most iconic beaches. "We need to grow up, grow out of this dependency, this mindset that we can't do more," Newsom said. [HuffPost]
REPUBLICANS SWEAR THEY WON'T BLINK IN DEBT LIMIT GAME OF CHICKEN With time running out for Congress to raise the debt ceiling, Republican senators are betting that Democrats will blink first and move to lift the borrowing cap on their own via a complicated process known as reconciliation. Fun fact: Congress has adjusted the debt limit nearly 100 times in the past century, including three times during the Donald Trump administration. [HuffPost]
FBI RAIDS NYPD UNION OFFICE, HOME OF RIGHT-WING LEADER Federal agents raided the offices of a New York City police union, the Sergeants Benevolent Association, and the Long Island home of its bombastic leader Ed Mullins, who has clashed with city officials over his incendiary tweets and hard-line tactics. The agency said the raids were part of "an ongoing investigation." [HuffPost]
BRIAN LAUNDRIE'S PARENTS WAITED LONGER TO REPORT HIM MISSING An attorney for Brian Laundrie, who remains missing as authorities investigate the slaying of his fiancée Gabby Petito, revealed that his parents last saw him longer ago than they previously reported. The uncertainty about when they last saw their son raises new questions, given the significance of that time period. [HuffPost]
