Day 2: What motivates you?

It's time to look inward.
Alcohol Reset Challenge

DAY 2 OF 7

What Motivates You?

Today, we're talking about intentions — the factors motivating you to make changes.

While they're not quite goals, they still play an important part in changing any long-standing patterns or habits in your life. Reminding yourself why you want to achieve a particular goal can give a big boost to your chances of success.

For example, your goal might be to take a month long break from drinking.

Your intentions, on the other hand, might include things like, "learn what kind of socializing I enjoy without alcohol" or "focus on feeling good in my body."

Intentions help you remember why you've chosen to do the challenge and what you want to get out of it.

So, what's motivating you to take a month long break?

Maybe you'd like to:

These are just a few of the potential benefits you might notice when quitting drinking for a month.

For today's challenge: Set aside some time to identify your intentions for taking a break from alcohol.

You might have one, three, or four intentions — maybe even more.

Considering why you want to take a break can help find those intentions. You might also ask yourself, "How can avoiding alcohol for a month benefit me?"

For example: "By not drinking, I'll sleep better at night and have more energy for the things I want to do."

Feeling stuck? Choose three factors (from the list above or on your own) motivating you to explore your relationship with alcohol and three potential benefits of going alcohol-free.

Once you set your intentions, keep them fresh in your mind throughout the month:

  • Keep a daily journal? Start or finish each entry during the month with your intention.
  • Repeat your intentions in the morning as you wake up and again at night as you get ready to drift off to sleep.
  • Write them down and put the note on your fridge, calendar, desk, or anywhere else you'll see it often.
  • Set your intention as a daily reminder on your phone.

Tomorrow, we'll dive into boundaries, including what they mean, why they matter, and how to set them for yourself.

Until tomorrow,
