MDA Announces Retail Promotion Grant Awardees

The Missouri Department of Agriculture's Missouri Grown program announced funding for seven retail businesses that carry Missouri Grown products. The Missouri Grown Retail Promotion Matching Grant awards up to $1,000 per retail store for reimbursement of expenses associated with promoting Missouri Grown member products.

"Our Missouri Grown members have told us that placing product in retail stores is one of the biggest challenges to their future growth," said Director of Agriculture Chris Chinn. "With this grant opportunity, we've identified willing business owners who want to solve that challenge. I'm excited to see the growing opportunity pay off for our small businesses, while helping consumers find Missouri products."

The grant raises awareness to communities about the products grown, raised and produced by members of the Missouri Grown program, the state's branded program for agriculture products. Funds also improve understanding of raising food and promotes agriculture in recipient communities.

Grant recipients are using award dollars in a variety of ways. Some recipients are focusing on physical promotion items, such as a mobile trailer wrap, billboards, store signage and magazine ads. Others are promoting Missouri Grown through live streams, digital advertisements, radio campaigns, social media and e-newsletters.

The 2022 grant recipients are:

  • Midwest Specialty Foods, Lee's Summit
  • Green Dirt Farm Creamery, Weston
  • Farmers' Meat Market LLC, Vienna
  • Maw Maw's Cupboard, Warrenton
  • Missouri Made c/o Dogwood Vintiques, Jefferson City
  • Schnucks Markets, multiple locations across the state
  • Local 60 Farmers' Market/Smithfield Food Trading Post, Smithville

DNR Offers Energize Missouri Agriculture Program Grants

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources is offering grants to help agricultural operations reduce energy costs. The Department has developed a $3 million Energize Missouri Agriculture Program to provide cost-share grants to eligible applicants.

The program reimburses agricultural operations up to 75% of the purchase cost of qualifying cost-saving energy-efficient equipment and systems - up to $7,500 per applicant. Items eligible for reimbursement include purchased energy cost-saving equipment and hardware, but does not include time and labor spent installing or operating the equipment.

Applicants should begin the process of preparing the application packet as soon as possible. Funding is limited and complete applications will be evaluated on a first-come, first-served basis. Applications must contain all required documentation before they will be stamped with the time and date of receipt for purposes of determining positions in the first-come, first-served list.

Successful applicants will be required to sign an agreement with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources laying out the terms and conditions of the program. Purchases made before an agreement is signed, dated and returned to the Department by the applicant will not qualify for reimbursement. Purchases only qualify after the recipient's signed agreement is approved and the recipient receives an approval letter from the Department to proceed.

The Energize Missouri Agriculture Program is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 and is part of the funds managed by the Department of Natural Resources' Division of Energy.

MU Set to Host Farm Lease Training Courses

Landowners and renters can learn about farm leases from University of Missouri Extension specialists Thursday, Feb. 10.

Participants can attend via Zoom or in person at one of six locations across the state, says Joe Koenen, MU Extension agriculture business specialist and longtime presenter on farm leases. The sessions begin at 6 p.m.

"Open communication is the key," Koenen says. "Communication helps landlords and tenants find a middle ground for leases and helps both parties understand their responsibilities and rights."

Topics include current rental rates and trends, items to include in a lease, terminating a lease, recreational leases, and crop and livestock share arrangements.

These locations are offering both online and in-person sessions:

  • Edina. Knox County High School library, 55701 State Highway 6.
  • Brookfield. Burris Community Center, 1 Center Drive.
  • Fayette. MU Extension Center in Howard County, Conference Room 3, 600 W. Morrison.
  • Jefferson City. MU Extension Center in Cole County, 2436 Tanner Bridge Road.
  • Lancaster. Schuyler County Courthouse, basement meeting room, 110 W. Washington.
  • Marshfield. MU Extension Center in Webster County, 800 S. Marshall St.
