Morning Rundown
Russian forces move within 9 miles of Kyiv's city center: Russian troops advanced close to the heart of Ukraine on Thursday, roughly nine miles within the city center, according to a senior U.S. defense official. The troops were reported to be to the northwest of Kyiv, about five miles from the outer city limits. Two lines of advance from the northeast are also making progress on their push to Kyiv. Since the start of the invasion more than two weeks ago, Russian forces have fired more than 775 missiles against Ukraine. During that time, at least 549 civilians, including 41 children, have been killed in Ukraine, according to the latest figures confirmed by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. Actual figures are likely much higher. Meanwhile, at least 957 civilians, including 52 children, have been injured, OHCHR figures show. During his latest address, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called Russia's attacks on his country "outright terror."
Former 'Empire' actor Jussie Smollett sentenced to 150 days in jail in hoax attack: Former "Empire" actor Jussie Smollett was sentenced to 150 days in county jail on Thursday for fabricating a 2019 hate crime attack on himself. Smollett alleged he was attacked, doused with an unknown liquid, had a noose placed around his neck, and called racist and homophobic slurs by two men late at night on a Chicago street. He has maintained that the incident was not orchestrated by himself. In December, a jury convicted Smollett on five of six felony counts of disorderly conduct stemming from him filing a false police report and lying to police, who spent more than $130,000 investigating his allegations. In addition to jail time, Smollett was ordered to pay $120,000 in restitution to the city of Chicago, fined $25,000 and must serve 30 months of felony probation.
Federal mask mandate for travel extended another month amid policy review: Masks will continue to be required on planes, trains and buses for at least another month, the Transportation Security Administration announced Thursday. The agency said the federal mask mandate for transportation would be extended through April 18. During the extension, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will work with government agencies to "help inform a revised policy framework for when, and under what circumstances, masks should be required in the public transportation corridor," according to a TSA press release. This is the shortest extension of the travel mask mandate since it was first enacted under President Joe Biden. Previously, the extensions had lasted for 90 days.
Mom pays off $137,000 debt: A Texas mom said she had NSYNC's "Bye Bye Bye" playing in the background when she finally paid off $137,000 in debt. Like many 30-somethings, Brandyn Rodriguez of Cibolo, Texas, said she had accumulated a lot of debt. When she became a single mom, the 38-year-old said she decided to take matters into her own hands and tackle it all. She said the first go-around at paying her debt off was unsuccessful, but when she and her husband had their second daughter, they got serious about taking control of their finances once and for all. The couple used the debt snowball method and Rodriguez also got a part-time job as a restaurant server. In the end, Rodriguez paid off her debt in over 59 months. Today, she shares her debt-free stories on her PositivelyB website and Instagram hoping to inspire others.
