| | | US pushes to expel Russian diplomats from UN Human Rights Council: Following the images that came out of Bucha, Ukraine, over the weekend, which showed Ukrainian civilians killed by Russian forces, the U.S. pushed to expel Russia from the United Nations Human Rights Council on Monday. U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Linda Thomas-Greenfield said she wants to have a vote this week, calling Moscow's participation in the human rights council "simply wrong." It's unclear whether the U.S. and its allies have the votes to take this step, but previous votes condemning Russia's invasion have yielded 141 and 140 votes -- crossing the two-thirds threshold of the U.N.'s 193 member states. While President Joe Biden also condemned Russia's killing of Ukrainian civilians on Monday, calling it a war crime and seeking more sanctions against Russia, the Kremlin demanded that "international leaders do not jump to conclusions." Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov downplayed what happened in Bucha and said it was a "fake attack." But more than 300 people are reported to have been killed and tortured in the Ukrainian city, with the death toll expected to be much higher once the city has been checked, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. | | Senate forces Jackson nomination out of committee with bipartisan vote: By a bipartisan vote of 53-47, the Senate has forced the nomination of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson out of the Judiciary Committee, putting the judge on track for final confirmation by week's end. GOP Sens. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Mitt Romney of Utah and Susan Collins of Maine voted with Democrats. All three Republicans will also support Jackson when it comes time to vote on final confirmation. Meanwhile, as the committee ticked through opening statements Monday, Republicans continued to raise issues with Jackson's record. But Democrats defended Jackson from what they called "hurtful" questioning from GOP senators. If confirmed, Jackson would be the first Black woman on the Supreme Court. | | Obama to return to White House Tuesday for health care event, lunch with Biden: For the first time since leaving office, former President Barack Obama is scheduled to return to the White House on Tuesday to join his former vice president in celebrating the Affordable Care Act, which he signed into law. Obama will join President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris in delivering remarks on "the success of the Affordable Care Act and Medicaid," according to a White House official. White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Obama and Biden will also have lunch at the White House Tuesday -- "as they used to do on a weekly basis" -- and added, "They continue to talk regularly." "They are real friends, not just Washington friends, and so I'm sure they will talk about events in the world as well as their families and personal lives," Psaki said. | | Baby with rare condition gets heart transplant after waiting 218 days: A baby girl who has been living in a Chicago hospital with her parents for the last six months while waiting for a new heart finally received one last week. Elodie Carmen Baker, who was diagnosed with a rare heart condition in August 2021, received a heart transplant at The Heart Center at Lurie Children's Hospital last month. She had been on the waitlist for a new heart for over 200 days. Since receiving her transplant, she has been recovering and receiving medication. Elodie's parents and those who cared for her in the hospital hope Elodie's story highlights the importance of organ donation and people being organ donors. "It really is important to stress the need for people to be organ donors," Dr. Michael MongΓ©, the surgical director of the Heart Failure/Heart Transplant Program at Lurie Children's who operated on Elodie, told "GMA." | |
