Manatees are counting on you, Friend, and time is not on our side. With the tragic record-setting loss of 1,100 manatees last year, we can't afford to lose any more. You see, Big Cruise companies have been caught and fined millions of dollars time and again for blatantly dumping TOXIC wastewater into our oceans. This dumping can lead to thick algal blooms forming on the water's surface, blocking sunlight, and killing off seagrass -- the main source of food for manatees. These grazing critters need to eat 10 percent of their body weight a day, and the lack of seagrass is starving them to death as we speak. But these cruise companies are STILL dumping to this day, with no regard for the consequences.

When these massive cruise ships dock at ports near shore, they stir up sand and contaminants in the water. This can reduce the water quality for the manatees living there, polluting their habitat and food sources.
The importance of manatees to the surrounding ecosystem cannot be overstated. They help keep vegetation in check by preventing it from overgrowing, while also consuming invasive species. They are important for the overall fertilization of underwater vegetation, making the entire ecosystem run smoothly for other sea life.
Because manatees are indicators of the health of an ecosystem, this tragedy may be extended beyond the utter decimation of these gentle creatures.
The seagrass die-off and the bulk of manatee deaths are happening in the Indian River Lagoon, which stretches along 156 miles of coastal Florida -- and is also home to more than 4,400 species of plants and animals.
