Gentle, slow-moving manatees -- often referred to as "sea cows" -- enjoy their time grazing on seagrass around Florida. But last year, 1,101 of these gentle creatures DIED -- the most ever on record. Cruise companies like Carnival Corp. continue to operate business-as-usual despite their role in contributing to the seagrass die-off that is STARVING manatees to death. Help us protect these gentle creatures and our planet from corporate greed -- make your contribution of $27 or more today when your gift will be matched dollar-for-dollar, up to $87,000.
In a blatant disregard for the lives of manatees, cruise ships sailing close to shore dump polluted wastewater and churn up sand and contaminants that endanger water quality and contribute to the destruction of seagrass that manatees depend on for survival. This leaves manatees starving from the loss of seagrass, their #1 source of nutrition.
Soon, Florida manatees may be as elusive as the mermaids they were mistaken for in times of old. This year, we've already reached 600 manatee deaths! The rates at which manatees are dying are unsustainable and irresponsible when Big Cruise corporations put their bottom lines over the lives of these precious creatures.
Manatees are suffocating and starving to death. Take a stand against Big Cruise corporations to protect manatees and our planet: Make your $27 contribution before MIDNIGHT TONIGHT.

We are at a critical point for manatees. Once listed as endangered in 1996, those protections were reduced in 2016, decreasing manatees' chances of long-term recovery. Now, we are seeing the consequences of this delisting.
Cruise ship pollution contributes to algal blooms with their wastewater dumping. These algal blooms become so thick that they block sunlight from reaching seagrass beds. Lacking the nutrients it needs to grow, seagrass dies off, taking away the main source of food for threatened manatees and feeding the algae to create even larger blooms. As a result, in Florida, the Indian River Lagoon has lost 58% of its seagrass since 2009, Sarasota Bay has lost 18% over the last three years, and Tampa Bay is down 12% since 2012.
Depleted seagrass creates a problem for people as well. Seagrass beds store about 18 percent of the world's oceanic carbon, helping to curb climate change. And at a time when we are seeing sea levels rise, they are providing coastal communities with protection from storm surges. Seagrass destruction threatens our communities and harms manatees.
Threatened manatees have lost more than half the seagrass they rely on. Protect manatees and our planet from Big Cruise pollution with your $27 contribution today, making double the impact!

Big Cruise corporations are knowingly complicit in this tragedy. Carnival Corp. has already been fined TWICE in the last 5 years for their illegal wastewater dumping. But cruise companies will continue to operate with blatant disregard to manatees and our oceans as long as they are able to obscure their illicit actions that are harming animals, people, and the environment.
Friends of the Earth is working to protect manatees and the planet from suffering and prevent destruction at the hands of private interests who only care about their profit margins. We are fighting with every tool in our toolbox, but we can't do this alone, Friend.
Your membership gift of $27 or more today will be matched, doubling your impact and allowing us to step up our fight against corporate interests like Carnival Corp. so that we can fight for manatees, people, and the planet. As a collective, we have the power to give manatees and other endangered species a chance for survival -- but time is not on our side as more manatees continue to starve. Make your contribution today!
Big Cruise companies like Carnival Corp. continue to harm our planet while covering up their polluting activities. Protect threatened and endangered species and our habitats with your $27 gift today – while this matching gift opportunity is still active!
