Welcome to The Independent's US evening newsletter

Cassidy Hutchinson's powerful testimony to the January 6 committee gave the clearest account yet of Donald Trump as an unhinged, lawless president, Carl Bernstein says. "She gave a picture of a Mad King," the legendary Watergate journalist told CNN. "The whole idea is now absolutely confirmed, proven, he is a criminal and a seditious president of the United States." Ms Hutchinson, a senior aide to former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, gave a first-hand account of the run-up to the US Capitol riots on Tuesday at a surprise hearing of the select committee probing the insurrection. |

What did we learn from Tuesday's bombshell Jan 6 hearing? |
An "irate" Donald Trump grabbed the steering wheel of his limousine on 6 January 2021 and attacked a Secret Service agent when he was told he was not being taken to the US Capitol, the House committee investigating that day's failed MAGA insurrection was told yesterday in its most stunning hearing yet. In cool, measured tones, which were in stark contrast to the incidents she was describing, former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson said she was told Mr Trump wanted to go to the Capitol so badly he attempted to grab the steering wheel of "The Beast" after being told he was going back to the White House instead. This is what else Ms Hutchinson had to tell the panel. |
