Hurricane Ian has made landfall as a near-Category 5 storm, roaring ashore in southwestern Florida. The storm intensified into on Wednesday morning as millions of Florida residents were told to evacuate in anticipation of storm surges, flash flooding and hurricane-force winds. The hurricane has already brought severe rain, winds, storm surges and flooding to the Florida Gulf Coast. The impact is only expected to grow in the coming hours as the strongest part of the storm hits land and moves slowly across the state. More than 2.5 million Floridians were placed under evacuation orders ahead of the storm's arrival near Tampa Bay as a Category 4 hurricane on Wednesday. However, some Sunshine State residents appear to be choosing to ignore the advice and stay put. On Tuesday, children were seen playing in the ocean at Key West, even as flooding and rough waters were already in evidence. Videos on social media platforms like TikTok meanwhile showed many users saying they would stay in place despite the danger.
