Climate change is creating more storms like Ian.

IAN LEAVES 2 MILLION WITHOUT POWER; STORM SURGES BREAK RECORDS Hurricane Ian tore into Florida as a powerful Category 4 storm, leaving millions of hunkered down residents without power, flooding coastal areas south of St. Petersburg and sucking Tampa Bay dry in a phenomenon called negative storm surge. At least one fatality appeared linked to the storm that Gov. Ron DeSantis called "a big one." Ian, now a tropical storm, continued lumbering across the state today and now threatens Georgia and the Carolinas. [HuffPost]
SLOW-MOVING MONSTERS: CLIMATE CHANGE WILL SPAWN MORE STORMS LIKE IAN While climate scientists are careful not to attribute any single hurricane solely to climate change, Ian is shaping up to be everything that experts have warned is becoming increasingly common in a warming world. The devastating storm went through a "rapid intensification" this week, as the warm water in the Gulf of Mexico supercharges an already deadly weather event. "Ian is operating in a warmer ocean and warmer atmosphere than we've had before. Physically, there are very straightforward things that you can unfortunately expect from that," a scientist told HuffPost's Chris D'Angelo. [HuffPost]

[AP] CATHOLIC LEADERS WORK TO SHIELD CLERGY FROM REPORTING CHILD ABUSE In 33 states, clergy are exempt from any laws requiring professionals such as teachers, physicians and psychotherapists to report information about alleged child sexual abuse to police or child welfare officials if the church deems the information privileged. The Roman Catholic Church has reportedly used its well-funded lobbying infrastructure and deep influence among lawmakers in some states to protect the privilege. [AP] THANKSGIVING COULD COST AN ARM AND A TURKEY LEG THIS YEAR Record-high turkey prices could dampen this year's Thanksgiving celebrations as avian influenza wipes out flocks and chokes the supply of birds, with Turkey inventory numbers hitting their lowest point in 16 years. And it's "likely to only get worse," an expert said. [HuffPost]
