Missouri Commission on Human Rights Encourages All Missourians to Welcome Refugees

August 31, 2022 – The Commissioners of the Missouri Commission on Human Rights (MCHR) are committed to fostering mutual understanding and respect for people of all races, ethnicities, religions, national origins, and ancestries. Missouri has welcomed refugees from numerous national origins who fled to the United States due to conflicts in their homeland. Recently, millions of people have fled Ukraine due to the Russian invasion, the United Nations calling it the fastest-growing refugee crisis in Europe since World War II. These Ukrainian refugees are now beginning to resettle in the United States and in Missouri, like the many thousands before them. According to the International Institute, Missouri welcomed over 1,000 Afghan refugees to four of our largest cities in 2021, and the number continues to increase. The International Institute of St. Louis is a non-profit organization that provides opportunities for immigrants and refugees to thrive in order to create a welcoming, prosperous, and healthy region for all.

MCHR encourages all Missourians to help create welcoming communities and to facilitate the successful integration of refugees into the economic and cultural fabric of our state to ensure that all people can thrive. We support the many efforts to make our communities places that are more vibrant for all. Missouri communities become more prosperous by ensuring that everyone is able to participate in economic, social, and civic opportunities.

Most importantly, welcoming refugees to Missouri protects the most precious right of all—the right to live free from persecution or discrimination. Accepting refugees and providing the most basic protections is, in many cases, lifesaving. By providing refugees with the right to work, to health, and to education, these newcomers can start productive lives in their host countries. The faster they can integrate into the labor force, the faster they can become productive members of society.

MCHR strives to prevent discrimination through education and outreach and to eliminate discrimination by the enforcement of the Missouri Human Rights Act through the complaint process. With Commissioners from each congressional district across the state, the MCHR is an eleven-member independent commission housed in the Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial Relations.
