1 big thing: Pelosi home invaded

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi wasn't home early this morning when an intruder allegedly used a hammer to attack her husband in their San Francisco residence.

  • "Where is Nancy, where is Nancy?" the intruder asked Paul Pelosi before the attack, Axios' Andrew Solender and Alayna Treene report.

Police officers were dispatched to the Pelosi residence around 2:27am local time, San Francisco Police Chief William Scott said at a news conference today.

  • Officers encountered suspect David DePape, 42, and Paul Pelosi, 82, "both holding a hammer."
  • DePape "pulled the hammer away from Mr. Pelosi and violently assaulted him with it," Scott said.

Paul Pelosi was transferred to a local hospital early this morning, along with the suspect.

  • Paul Pelosi is expected to make a full recovery.
  • DePape will be charged with attempted homicide, assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse, burglary and "several other additional felonies," Scott said.

The bottom line: The attack comes amid an uptick in threats against members of Congress and a series of security incidents over the summer.

2. Musk's next surprise

Elon Musk is already subverting some expectations that he'd immediately reverse bans on people such as former President Trump, Axios Pro Rata author Dan Primack reports.

  • Musk is proceeding more cautiously, perhaps as a nod to the sensitivities of Twitter's advertisers.

Trump's Twitter account remains suspended as of this afternoon.
