Welcome to Independent Women, a weekly newsletter penned by myself - Maya Oppenheim - the only Women's Correspondent to exist in a UK news outlet.
Every Thursday morning, come rain or shine, I'll be bringing you a weekly round-up of The Independent's most razor-sharp opinion pieces and hardest-hitting news stories exploring issues which both devastate and ignite the lives of women in the UK and around the world.
We continue to live on a planet where a woman is killed by a current or ex-partner every four days in England and Wales. While across the Atlantic in America, a woman is killed by a current or ex with a gun every 16 hours. And as the Covid crisis compounds pre-existing inequalities and the growth of the far right both emboldens misogynists and impinges on women's most basic human rights, it is more important than ever that we shine a light on injustice.
But this newsletter will not be doom and gloom, we will also be bringing you all the latest stories which celebrate women and give them the voice which history has long denied them, with contributions from the lifestyle desk - including features and interviews - providing some light to the shade.
