Brexit regret is palpable at third anniversary (PA Images) |
Brexit is three years old this week! Our little bundle of joy has grown up so fast. Unfortunately, few grow-ups have anything good to say about our troublesome toddler as another birthday comes around. Top economists have found that Brexit has caused a £100bn-a-year loss in output, leaving Britain's economy 4% smaller than it would have been inside the EU. It comes as the IMF judged the outlook for UK growth to be the worst in the G7 (worse even than sanctions-saddled Russia). Ex-donor Tory Guy Hands was scathing about the mess we're in, saying Brexit has proved a "complete disaster" based on "total lies". But Rishi Sunak continued to insist that lower living standards have nothing to do with Brexit (he blamed Russia for starting a war). The prime minister looks like he is finally gearing up for a deal with the EU on the Northern Ireland Protocol. A compromise on both customs checks and the role of the European court are said to be all but done. Brexiteer Tories and the DUP are quietly sceptical, ready to be loudly irate. Will we still be bickering about the protocol on Brexit's fourth birthday? |
