Here’s a hybrid, part poem, part play, I think. I don’t know that it’s my best work, but I decided to share it anyway. Re-appropriated some lines from a story I discarded. Anyway, since this is such garbage/an experiment, feel free to post your own creative writing below… Always this feeling of loss with you. Finally getting to hold something important and fragile, then immediately dropping it. Several years ago, a therapist asked me if I’d ever been attracted to anyone. She didn’t believe it was something I’d ever experienced. What does it feel like when you know you like someone? she asked me. She said: I’m not asking what you’re thinking, but what do you feel in your body? This is a hard question. How do you describe a feeling? The answer is: I don’t feel, I think. But I’m not in control of what I think, so I call it a feeling. Always this feeling of loss with you. I do feel it. What does it feel like? Nausea. And scared. I’m scared. What does scared feel like? My chest hurts. I can’t look. I don’t know at what. There’s just something I can’t look at. Anything. Straight ahead. I feel like I have an ulcer. What does that feel like? Pain that keeps reaching back further into me. Hits the back wall of my stomach. Like I need to exorcise it from my body. I have to throw up; I need to throw up. Crying. I don’t know how to describe what crying feels like. Try. Release. It’s leaving, but it still hurts. What does hurt feel like? My heart is ripping itself apart. Something’s missing. That is a feeling too. Something should be there and isn’t. That’s what’s painful. I want to touch someone who hasn’t been born yet or someone who’s died. There should be someone there who can’t be. Reaching my hands out and there being nothing.
