A message from Congresswoman Ann Wagner
| | | | | | | Dear , Taiwan faces an unprecedented threat from an increasingly erratic People’s Republic of China. China is forging a dangerous relationship with Russia and, if we are to defeat the PRC’s plan to replace the United States as the world’s preeminent power, we cannot be ruled by fear. That means boldly standing by our friends and partners, particularly Taiwan. We must increase our economic ties, defense relationship, and political support of Taiwan’s democratic system. Last week, my bipartisan legislation to combat China’s aggression and support an independent Taiwan passed the U.S. House, and I hope the Senate takes immediate action so we can more immediately confront the ongoing threat China poses. The geopolitical situation surrounding Taiwan is changing rapidly and our relationship with them must be flexible enough to meet these new challenges. I am worried the State Department’s current approach is overly concerned with avoiding even the slightest chance of offending Beijing, so during our Foreign Affairs Committee hearing last week, I questioned Secretary of State Antony Blinken on how the State Department’s budget will move our critical partnership with Taiwan in the right direction. Watch here. Last week, the House passed the Parents Bill of Rights, legislation that will help us fight back and ensure parents are fully involved in their children’s education. This bill is simple and is based on five key pillars that give parents a seat at the table. This gives parents the right to know what’s being taught in schools, the right to be heard, right to see the school budget and spending, the right to protect their child’s privacy, and the right to be updated on any violent activity at school. These are basic rights, and I am proud to have voted in support of this vital legislation. The Foreign Affairs Committee held a subcommittee hearing on the importance of the Pacific Islands. China does not share our vision for a free and open Indo-Pacific. It seeks to coerce these countries into furthering its dangerous agenda. The United States must continue to stand together with countries in the region and combat China's growing influence. I questioned our witnesses on the status of Chinese infrastructure in the area and what the implications are for U.S. interests. Watch here. I have recently held Office Hours with Ann throughout Missouri’s 2nd District. These are great opportunities for me speak directly with you about the issues most important to you.
