💼 1 big thing: PTO goes unused
Reproduced from Pew; Chart: Axios Visuals

An outsized share of American workers don't take all of their available paid time off, Axios Markets co-author Emily Peck writes from new Pew data out today.

By the numbers: 46% of workers said they take less time off than offered.

  • Slightly more than half of the group said they didn't need to take more time off.

Pew asked about all paid time off, including not only vacation but sick time and personal days. But in explaining why they didn't use all their time off, none of the answers were about not getting sick.

  • Lower-wage earners were more likely to worry about losing their jobs if they took too much time away, said Kim Parker, director of social and demographic trends at Pew.
  • Higher-income workers were more likely to keep working because they worried they'd fall behind.

In the survey, 89% of workers said that having paid time off for vacations, doctor's visits or minor illnesses was extremely or very important to them.

  • What explains the mismatch? People want to know that they can take time off if they need to, Parker said.

2. WSJ reporter spy charge 1st since Cold War

The State Department and White House decried "in the strongest terms" Russia's detention of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich and warned again against any U.S. citizen traveling to the country.

  • Gershkovich is the first U.S. journalist to be detained in Russia on an espionage charge since the Cold War, Axios' Ivana Saric reports.
  • The WSJ reported Gershkovich first fell out of touch with his editors on Wednesday afternoon.

The FSB accused Gershkovich of trying to obtain classified information "on the instructions of the United States."

  • He pleaded not guilty in a Moscow court today. The court ordered that he be held in custody until May 29. Acquittals in espionage cases are rare.

The Journal said in a statement that it "vehemently denies the allegations from the FSB" and called for his immediate release.

4. 🥴 Presenting: The mammoth meatball
Photo: Piroschka van de Wouw/Reuters

We told you on Tuesday about the meatball grown from the DNA of a very-extinct woolly mammoth.

  • Above: A photo of said meatball at the NEMO Science in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

As unbelievable as it is, Tim Noakesmith, founder of Australian food startup Vow, promised the meatball was not an April Fools' joke, per AP.

  • "We know now that [the mammoth] died from climate change. And so what we wanted to do was see if we could create something that was a symbol of a more exciting future that's not only better for us, but also better for the planet," he added.
