Affordable holiday in Italy in August? |
We want to go to Italy in August, taking in cities and coast, without spending a fortune. What do you suggest? | |
Milan is a joy in August, when the city empties. With crowds and traffic abated, you can explore the highlights: the vast Duomo, one of the largest cathedrals in the world; the Quadrilatero d'Oro (Golden Rectangle), the hub of the fashion universe; and the masterpieces hung at the Pinacoteca di Brera. As a business (rather than leisure) destination, Milan is the cut-price summer gateway to Italy. After spending 48 hours there, hop on a local train to Genoa, which is well worth another couple of days – appreciating the Renaissance architecture, the Mediterranean setting and the superb food. Then take a train east along the Ligurian coast to Camogli. This charming resort has a good beach, a rich history and easy access over the peninsula to Santa Margherita Ligure and Rapallo – both preferable to over-visited Portofino. The later you can leave your trip in August, the better the availability and the lower the cost. Our guide to the best of Genoa |
