A Message from Ann

A message from Congresswoman Ann Wagner

Dear ,

I was pleased to present Parkway Superintendent Keith Marty and Principal Jaime Otto with a box of children's books provided to River Bend Elementary by the Library of Congress Surplus Books Program. The Surplus Books Program provides books from the Library of Congress, ranging from children's books to non-fiction and books on tape, to schools and nonprofit organizations throughout the United States. If you'd like to learn more about this program and how to apply, you can visit the Library of Congress website here.

If you are planning a visit to Washington, DC, you can book a tour of the Library of Congress through my website here. We also offer tours of the White House and U.S. Capitol. Feel free to reach out to my office at (202) 225-1621 to learn more.

Last week, I met with the President of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, Jim Bullard. We discussed the continuing effects of inflation on Missouri families and small businesses as well as the recent bank failures. Although the Biden Administration and Treasury Secretary Yellen repeatedly dismissed inflation as "transitory" following the passage of the Democrats' $1.9 trillion spending package in 2021, we are all still experiencing higher costs for everything from groceries to utility bills.

I also reiterated my concerns that financial regulators at the San Francisco Federal Reserve and management at Silicon Valley Bank were ignoring blatant warning signs for over a year that the bank was at risk of collapse. We talked about how this turmoil could have been avoided and what the St. Louis Federal Reserve is doing to ensure our Missouri banks remain strong. As a Subcommittee Chair on the House Financial Services Committee, I am committed to working with both my colleagues in Congress and local stakeholders to bolster regional economic and financial development.

In case you missed it, you can watch my questioning during the Financial Services Committee hearing on Silicon Valley Bank here.

In the Foreign Affairs Committee, I recently questioned Inspectors General from the State Department, Defense Department, and USAID to ensure we are providing robust oversight of our assistance to Ukraine. The United States is leading international efforts to help Ukraine defeat Russia's abhorrent and utterly unprovoked invasion of its sovereign territory. These efforts are necessary to stop Vladimir Putin in his tracks now--before he attacks a NATO ally and puts American servicemembers in harm's way. We must continue to verify that our support for Ukraine is as efficient and effective as possible, and I am working with my colleagues to make certain audits are conducted and the necessary mechanisms are in place to prevent corruption or the misuse of American resources and materiel.

You can watch this hearing here.

In Congress, one of my top priorities has been to protect seniors from financial fraud and exploitation. Financial exploitation of seniors is elder abuse and, tragically, about twenty percent of senior investors fall victim to financial fraud, losing an estimated $2.9 billion annually. In January, my bill, the Financial Exploitation Prevention Act, passed the House of Representatives with widespread bipartisan support. This bill gives the financial industry better tools to address suspected financial exploitation and abuse of seniors as well as those with mental and physical disabilities. To continue this effort, I recently joined my colleagues to introduce the Senior Security Act, a bipartisan bill that creates a Senior Investor Taskforce at the Securities and Exchange Commission to investigate and analyze how fraudsters target seniors for financial exploitation.

As your Member of Congress, I will always work to protect the most vulnerable in our community and throughout the United States.

Sincerely,

Ann Wagner
Member of Congress
