Certified Peer Specialist

The Certified Peer Specialist (CPS) initiative is a significant part of the behavioral health transformation efforts taking place in Missouri. Peer support services are delivered by individuals who have been successful in recovery from mental and/or substance use disorders who help others experiencing similar situations.

Beginning in March of 2018, the Missouri Credentialing Board, in partnership with the Department of Mental Health, began training and credentialing peers across the state with one standard curriculum, providing them with the tool they need to use their personal story to provide support to all individuals in recovery from substance use, mental health, or co-occuring disorders. Basic training for peers has been and will continue to be free of charge.

How to Become a Certified Peer Specialist

  1. Submit a training application
  2. Complete the week long training
  3. Take the online proctored exam
  4. Submit for credentialing

There is a $75 fee for credentialing and the certification will need to be renewed every 2 years.

If you need help paying for the training, credentialing, supportive services during the training, or any other help, visit a Missouri Job Center or SkillUP provider to see about available resources.
