2023 Publications Await You! As a member of NPG, you and all of our supportive fans already know that our list of publications continues to grow. But have you had a chance to read the newest titles? We wanted to offer you an opportunity to review what NPG has published recently; this year, we have issued two new Forum papers and two new state profiles. In February, NPG published Modern Megadrought: Population, Denial, and Crisis in the American Southwest by Kathleene Parker, and in April, NPG released Adversity for Biodiversity: A Reflection on My Experience at COP15 by Rob Harding. Additionally, NPG has shared state population commentaries on Arizona, Colorado, and Georgia as part of our State Profile Series. While we know that the population issue is complex and will not be solved overnight, you can support NPG by spreading the word about these publications via social media or even face-to-face conversations. Taking steps such as pressuring our political leaders to act, writing letters to editors, and creating conversations around family planning are also great efforts. Modern Megadrought: Population, Denial, and Crisis in the American Southwest by Kathleene Parker Introduction: In the 1990s and early 2000s, as a correspondent for a major New Mexico newspaper, I reported the first warnings by scientists, including those at Los Alamos National Laboratory, about the vulnerabilities that the American Southwest – part of the Mojave, Chihuahuan, and Sonoran deserts – will face if the region returns, even without climate change, to far-drier norms. Adversity for Biodiversity: A Reflection on My Experience at COP15 by Rob Harding Abstract: The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework1 adopted in December 2022 by representatives of most of the world’s national governments is inadequate to halt and reverse the disturbing loss of biodiversity globally. Concerted efforts to increase the new Framework’s ambition were dismissed and ultimately ignored. Human overshoot – the collective impacts of more than eight billion people – remains a taboo topic, even during the highest-level negotiations regarding the protection of remaining life on Earth. Rather than being a leader, the United States is missing in action. I offer my perspective as an American conservationist, wilderness and wildlife advocate, and planetary health activist who attended COP15.
