| | ⚠️ Hazy and dangerous fumes from ongoing wildfires in Canada have engulfed the skies over much of the Northeast, prompting serious air quality alerts in at least 16 states, postponing sports games, closing offices and canceling events. Wildfire smoke and ash can irritate eyes, nose, throat and lungs, making you cough or wheeze, and can make it hard to breathe, according to the CDC. Officials urge the most effective way to protect yourself during wildfire emergencies is to stay indoors or limit time outdoors when there is smoke in the air. ⚕️ Pope Francis' night "passed well" after he had intestinal surgery on Wednesday and he will spend several days in the hospital recovering, Vatican officials said. The Holy See Press Office announced Wednesday evening local time that the surgery was over and "it took place without complications and lasted three hours." The surgery comes a few months after the 86-year-old pontiff spent three days in the hospital in March after he complained he was having difficulty breathing. 🏛️ A fresh batch of financial records for justices of the U.S. Supreme Court was published by the federal judiciary on Wednesday, which shed some light on their income and affiliations outside the court. However, they did not include key details critics said will contribute to an elevated atmosphere of mistrust. Justice Clarence Thomas and Justice Samiel Alito's records were not among the records published online. These highly anticipated disclosures, which cover all of 2022, arrive in the wake of revelations about Thomas' financial ties to a Texas billionaire and GOP megadonor. Thomas has denied any wrongdoing. 🎓 A father and son were killed in the mass shooting following a high school graduation in Richmond, Virginia, police said. The 19-year-old suspect is in custody in connection with the shooting, which unfolded in a park on Tuesday after the Huguenot High School graduation ended at a nearby theater. The suspect watched the graduation ceremony, after which it appears he went to his car to get a handgun and then returned, police said. 👗 Despite living over 200 miles away from each other, two Tennessee teens went to senior prom together this spring. The two met after they were neighbors at the same neonatal intensive care unit in 2005 and their families bonded. | |
