SIMON CALDER'S TRAVEL WEEK |
The weather has been a tad changeable this week, but don't let that get you down: summer is ready to boil over, with the Met Office predicting a wetter spell will soon make way for sunny days – and possible heatwaves. It's time to book yourself in to one of the UK's outstanding beach hotels. |

| On Northern Ireland's Ards Peninsula, west of Belfast, you get two coasts for the price of one: the Irish Sea to the east, and Strangford Lough to the west, with plenty of interest on land too. |

Which beach resorts in Wales do you recommend with good access by rail? |
The north coast has a string of resorts served by frequent trains, including Rhyl, Prestatyn and Colwyn Bay, but the stand out for me is the fine Victorian town of Llandudno (served by a spur from the main line). It was created as a 19th-century holiday resort in the shadow of the Great Orme, which rises nearly 650ft above the Irish Sea. The beach is wide and safe. The line through mid-Wales splits to serve resorts on Cardigan Bay: you could go south to Aberystwyth, but I recommend heading north and choosing somewhere from Aberdyfi to Pwllheli; the Cambrian Coast railway itself is a travel joy. In the south, you could simply make for Barry Island (or Barrybados, as some call it). But the further west you the venture the more picturesque South Wales becomes. In Pembrokeshire, Tenby is picturesque fishing port with a rich history evident in its Norman walls and Georgian mansions as well as the appealing Castle Beach. The rail journey from Cardiff takes around 2h50m with a change in Swansea. Try the Welsh Highland Railway |
