SAGE met from 25 to 29 September 2023, in a closed session.  Its recommendations will pertain to, among other issues, the efficacy and safety of dengue vaccine, TAK-003; strategies for the introduction of Multivalent Meningococcal Conjugate Vaccines (MMCVs) in countries of the African meningitis belt, to prevent meningitis disease and epidemics; and the use of malaria R21/Matrix-M vaccine in children.  SAGE’s full agenda is available here. Wednesday, 04 October EPI-WIN webinar: Vaccines for Seasonal Influenza and Avian Influenza 13:00 – 14:00 CEST This event will focus on influenza vaccines - what is important for seasonal influenza vaccines to be effective, and the development of vaccine virus candidates for zoonotic influenza as part of preparedness efforts.  Further information and registration: here Thursday, 05 October New country, regional and global data on preterm births Authors from WHO, UNICEF and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine will publish a new paper in the Lancet’s special 200th anniversary edition, providing global, regional and country estimates and trends for preterm births (before 37 full weeks of pregnancy). This is a critical issue for health and development.  Complications relating to prematurity are now the leading cause of death in early childhood.  For survivors, being born early increases their likelihood of suffering major health problems, developmental delays and disability as children, as well as chronic health conditions into later life. Country data will be available on WHO’s Global Health Observatory website.  Requests for embargoed materials and interview requests should be sent to   keenanl@who.int and mediainquiries@who.int Other events of interest to the media A regular meeting of the Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization (SAGE) will be held from 25 to 29 September 2023, in a closed session.  A press conference is tentatively scheduled on Monday, 3 October - details to follow. The Technical Advisory Group on Genomics (TAG-G) will hold its first meeting in Geneva on 5 and & October, in a closed session.  The TAG-G was established in September 2023 to provide WHO with technical advice on genomics and to support the secretariat with work aimed at accelerating access to genomic knowledge and technologies, especially in low- and middle-income countries.  Further information: here World Meningitis Day is on 05 October.  For more information about meningitis: here.  New episode (N°27) of the Global Health Matters podcast, Risking lives to save lives: Health workers in conflict zones, dives into the circumstances and risks health workers face in conflict settings.  The Safeguarding Health in Conflict coalition recently published a report that documented 232 health workers killed, more than 700 incidents where health facilities were damaged and almost 300 health personnel kidnapped in 2022.
