The Bost Bulletin Dear Friend, It was another suspenseful week in Washington, as we finally elected a new speaker, Mike Johnson from Louisiana. It was great to get back to governing and addressing the needs of the American people once again. Once I returned home after our work in D.C., I hit the road for Effingham County, where I had the pleasure of meeting with many constituents. Check out the details below! Electing the 56th Speaker of the House I was proud to vote for Mike Johnson as the new speaker, as he is a consistent conservative with a steady hand to lead the House through consequential times. I share his conservative vision for America and what he wants to accomplish for the American people. We’ve got a lot of work to do, from securing the border to passing conservative spending bill and aiding Israel. Literally minutes after Speaker Johnson was sworn it, that work began anew. Supporting Israel and Condemning Hamas Our first order of business under Speaker Johnson’s leadership was consideration of a resolution I cosponsored supporting Israel and reaffirming their right to self-defense against Hamas. It also demanded Hamas cease their violent attacks and release all the hostages. The resolution passed the House by a bipartisan 412-10 margin. Frustratingly enough but in no way surprising, it was nearly universally opposed by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and her allies in The Squad. Securing Our Energy Security We then got back to working through appropriations bills to fund essential government services. This week we passed the Energy and Water Appropriations bill and debated dozens of amendments. The House has now approved conservative funding bills that cover over 70% of discretionary government services. The Democrat-controlled Senate, by comparison, has yet to pass one appropriations bill. ZERO. Demanding Accountability on VA Abortions The Department of Veterans’ Affairs reported it has performed 88 abortions in the past year. When I led my colleagues on the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs in demanding additional information and a justification for using taxpayer funding on these procedures, the VA failed to answer. As Chairman of the Veterans’ Affairs Committee, it is my responsibility to ensure that the Committee is conducting clear oversight over the VA and that they are upholding their responsibility to veterans. It is also my responsibility to ensure that American taxpayers aren’t forced to fund abortion services that violate their deeply held beliefs. I am fighting to get to the bottom of the issue and will not rest until we hold the Biden administration accountable. Protecting Veterans' Second Amendment Rights Last week, the Senate adopted an amendment that mirrors my legislation protecting Veterans’ Second Amendment rights. The amendment would ensure that veterans who need help with their finances won’t be forwarded to DOJ for a background check without due process. Our veterans shouldn’t have to meet a higher burden of proof to preserve their constitutional rights. I look forward to the provision being included in the final veterans’ funding bill passed by the House and Senate. Monitoring the Crisis at Our Southern Border U.S. Border Patrol announced there were 269,735 encounters with illegals at the southern border in September. That's the highest monthly total ever recorded. We know that terrorists view the border as an effective means to enter the country and attack Americans. With everything that is going on in the world, we cannot sit idly by and let the inflow of illegal immigrants increase. I voted against a continuing resolution –or “CR”– that kept the status quo on spending with no plan to secure the border. We need more border agents. We need to end catch and release. And we need to finish the wall NOW. I’m continuing to fight for these America First principles in Washington. Visiting Sherwin-Williams Distribution Center Then I headed home and hit the road for Effingham, where I start with a tour the Sherwin-Williams Distribution Center. The facility has 600 full-time employees, including 60 veterans. They travel over 22 million miles to ship over one billion pounds of product each year. Thanks for all they do to strengthen the economy in Effingham County! Riding Along with Illinois Farm Bureau As a proud member of the House Agriculture Committee, I’m working closely with local farmers to make sure Southern Illinois’ needs are met in the upcoming Farm Bill. I have traveled many miles across our 34 counties meeting directly with farmers and producers and touring their facilities. On Friday, I was in Mason at the Guse Farm. I had a great time hearing their perspective on Southern Illinois ag and seeing the great operation they have on the ground. Highlighting Need for Relief at the Pump Last, but certainly not least, I spent Saturday back in Effingham, where I joined Americans for Prosperity Illinois at the Moto Mart in Effingham. AFP and the Moto Mart rolled back prices at the pump to $2.38 a gallon, the price for gas when President Trump left office. No doubt, Joe Biden’s anti-energy agenda has had a big impact on the price hardworking Americans pay at the pump. I had a great time meeting with constituent commuters who were filling up and remembers the good old days (two years ago) when we put a premium on investing in American-made energy.
