When I first started getting into playing jazz, one thing was very clear.
Jazz standards felt difficult to play.
Learning them was incredibly challenging.
There were so many chords, and I had no idea how to improvise.
And for years I felt afraid to play them at public jazz jam sessions.
I just didn't have the confidence I needed.
Meanwhile, I watched in awe as pro-level jazz musicians could recall many jazz standards and improvise effortlessly over them.
So what was it they had figure out that I hadn't?
I didn't know many jazz standards (despite trying to). They did.
I didn't completely understand how the chord progressions worked. They did.
I didn't have many strategies for improvising over them. They did.
But this is what changed everything.
I learned one jazz standard and saw a pattern.
I learned another jazz standard and saw similarities to the other one, but new lessons emerged.
Then I learned another jazz standard and figured out a simple way to start making sense of the chord progressions.
And so on...
Suddenly I realized that once I learned one jazz standard really well, it was as if the next one I learned was much easier.
I was figuring out how jazz standards worked!
And then I started figuring out how to improvise over them, one strategy at a time, with each new one I learned a new "light bulb moment" came about.
But none of that would have been possible if I hadn't had help from teachers showing me the way.
