Population in the News A Round-up of Population News Journalism that discusses population size and growth is essential for Americans. When the topic is present in the news, Americans can better understand the effects of population trends in our communities and on our natural resources. When population issues are discussed earnestly with fact-based talking points, listeners (and readers) are more likely to engage in the discussion. Global wildlife populations plummeted by 69% on average between 1970 and 2018, according to WWF’s Living Planet Report 2022.” Human Activity is Causing Environmental Challenges at the Baltic Sea – November 2, 2023   “The Baltic Sea is facing increasing challenges due to climate change and biodiversity degradation driven by eutrophication, pollution, land use, and resource extraction, according to a report published by the Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission…The findings serve as a sobering reminder that the Baltic Sea faces critical challenges stemming from human activities.” Human Activity Jeopardizing Earth's Life-Support Systems – September 14, 2023  “In a ‘health check’ for the entire planet published in the Science Advances journal, an international team of 29 experts found that the Earth is now ‘well outside of the safe operating space for humanity’ due to human activity.” Climate-Changing Human Activity Could Lead to 1 Billion Deaths Over the Next Century – August 28, 2023   "As predictions of climate models become clearer, the harm we are doing to children and future generations can increasingly be attributed to our actions," said Pearce (an expert in energy policy).   When this direct correlation is recognized, greenhouse gas emissions liabilities can no longer be ignored. The study found that to limit these enormous future liabilities and save many human lives, humanity needs to stop burning fossil fuels as quickly as possible by following a more aggressive approach to energy efficiency and renewable energy.” Human Activity Impacts 97 Percent of the World's Coastline – March 21, 2023   “The threats human activity pose to coastal ecosystems and biodiversity come from both the land and sea, sometimes arriving far from human activity,” said Allan (study lead author). “Therefore, coastal conservation must incorporate land-sea connections.
