The Bost Bulletin Dear Friend, Another busy week is in the books. House Republicans have been working through the 12 appropriations bills that fund every aspect of the federal government. Since Speaker Johnson’s election last week, we’ve voted on hundreds of amendments and final passage for funding bills addressing energy security and interior programs. Next week we begin consideration of the transportation funding bill and financial services. Through it all, we’ve kept a close eye on the dangerous situation in the Middle East. I’m proud the House came together in a bipartisan fashion to provide emergency assistance to Israel. Please reading to learn more. Supporting our Closest Ally in the Middle East House Republicans brought a bill to the floor last week to provide $14.3 billion in emergency assistance to Israel as it combats Hamas terrorists who are holding American citizens and other innocent civilians hostage. The legislation included funding for securing the American embassy and evacuating U.S. citizens to safety. All the spending was fully offset – meaning no new government spending – by reducing bloated spending at the IRS. At a time when Republicans and Democrats can’t find much to agree upon in Washington, it was good to see over a dozen House Democrats supporting our bill and standing up to AOC and The Squad. Countering Anti Semitism on College Campuses At this point, we've all seen the disgusting displays of antisemitism at certain colleges and universities across America. I cosponsored a resolution condemning this hatred and urging college administrators and faculty to voice their opposition to antisemitism on campus. Securing Funding for Southern Illinois Water Treatment Facilities To be an effective representative, I believe you must fight for our shared values while delivering real results for the communities you represent. That’s why I’m proud the House voted on Friday to approve funding I requested to improve sewer and water treatment projects in Dieterich, Centralia, and Teutopolis. This funding, included in the Fiscal Year 2024 Interior Appropriations bill, will be a big step forward for the many thousands of rural Southern Illinoisans who rely on these facilities for public health and sanitation. Joining my GOP Colleagues with Sean Hannity I was happy to join many of my GOP colleagues in the U.S. Capitol for Speaker Mike Johnson’s interview with Sean Hannity on Wednesday, the speaker laid out positive vision for the country. House Republicans are fighting for conservative values and leading on behalf of the American people! Getting Help to Farmers in Need Our farmers and producers are the backbone of our nation’s economy; and their job isn’t easy. It’s a stressful business where livelihoods can be impacted by outside – and sometimes uncontrollable – factors, like market conditions, financial pressures, and the weather. It’s important that they have somewhere to turn in times of need. I was pleased to help lead legislation to expand access to mental health services for our hardworking Americans in rural communities. They need to know they are not alone, and that help is available. Keeping Up with the Women Veterans Task Force When I became chairman of the House Veterans' Affairs Committee, one of my first actions taken was to reauthorize the bipartisan Women Veterans Task Force to ensure we're best addressing the unique needs of women who have served. You can learn more about the Task Force's mission and conclusions by clicking here. Speaking at the Veteran Job Mission's Coalition Meeting I was honored to be the keynote speaker for Veteran Jobs Mission's coalition meeting in DC. Board chairman Mark Elliott and I had a great time discussing efforts to build public/private partnerships that increase employment opportunities for our veterans. You can learn more about their work at www.veteranjobsmission.com.
Highlighting the Need for Relief at the Pump In last weekend’s newsletter, I shared the details of an event I joined in Effingham hosted by Americans for Prosperity. The Moto Mart on 3rd Street rolled back prices at the pump to $2.38/gallon, the same price they were when President Trump left office. We had long lines of commuters who were desperate to return to the days of steady, affordable gas prices. Sadly, the Biden administration’s war on American-made energy has made it all the tougher for working families to afford the fuel they need. Regardless, I will continue fighting to put America First, and invest in developing the vast energy resources we have here at home.
