ART SPEAKS: A Behind the-Scenes Look at the Making of The Culture November 9 |12:30–1:30 pm | Free Exhibition curators Hannah Klemm and Andréa Purnell discuss the polyphonic approach to creating The Culture: Hip Hop and Contemporary Art in the 21st Century and the aesthetic attributes of how hip hop grew from local grassroots community engagement. Participants will receive Zoom information after registering. Art Speaks YOGA SESSIONS WITH NICO MARIE November 12 | 10:15-11:15 am | $10 ($5 for Members) In connection with The Culture: Hip Hop and Contemporary Art in the 21st Century, join Yogi Nico Marie for a yoga session that features Black music in combination with mental/physical wellbeing. Nico Marie has been teaching yoga with a certification in Vinyasa since 2016, and her mission has been to create space for Black people to receive the healing and health benefits of yoga. No experience needed; sessions are beginner-friendly. Please wear comfortable clothes and bring a yoga mat; water will be provided. Participants must be 18 or older. Yoga Sessions FREE FRIDAYS: THE CULTURE November 10 | 10 am-8 pm | Free Experience The Culture for free! On Fridays, ticketed exhibitions are free and the Museum is open late, with the last entry into the exhibition at 8 pm. HALF-OFF ADULT TICKETS: THE CULTURE November 12 | 10am-5pm | $6 Celebrate hip hop's 50th anniversary and save 50 percent when you see The Culture. Discount is available for adult tickets on Sundays in November. SCREENING: Fight the Power: How Hip Hop Changed the World November 10 | 10:30 am-2:30 pm | Free In celebration of National Hip Hop History month, Nine PBS is partnering with the Saint Louis Art Museum to show special free screenings of PBS documentary Fight the Power: How Hip Hop Changed the World. The first two episodes of the four-part series will be screened in the Museum's Farrell Auditorium each Friday in November. The first episode will be shown at 10:30 am and 1:30 pm; the second episode will be screened at 11:30 am and 2:30 pm. No tickets are required. Screening Info FAMILY SUNDAY: Diwali Celebration November 12 | 1-4 pm | Free This week SLAM will be celebrating Diwali, the Indian festival of lights with artmaking and a special Garage Lab performance by DJ Blaze. Family Sunday Opening of SLIFF Explore the world of hip-hop at the opening night of #SLIFF32 on Thursday. DJ Charlie Chan Soprano of Run DMC will kick off the party, followed by a panel with SLAM's "Culture" exhibit co-curator, Andrea Purnell.
