The Holiday for the Poor This week we celebrate two holidays tied to the Christmas season: The Feast of Saint Stephen and Boxing Day. Most people don't know, but these two celebrations are connected. Saint Stephen was the first martyr of the Church, described as a deacon in the book of Acts. Deacons were tasked with the distribution of the wealth of the Church to the poor. Boxing day started as a feast in the British Commonwealth Nations to buy gifts for the poor in honor of… you guessed it - Saint Stephen! This tradition is the reason behind so many post-Christmas sales. Many companies wanted to participate in charitable giving on St. Stephen's Day through discounting popular items. It's also the reason good King Winceslaus went out to help a poor family on the Feast of Stephen (In the popular carol)! The Church has a long tradition of taking care of the poor at Christmas time. Like so many Christmas traditions this has been secularized to be days of sales and discounts. But, let's bring back the true meaning behind the after Christmas sales. To help, we are offering our best sellers of 2023 at 20% off in the hopes that you find a special gift for your parish to distribute or to give directly to someone in need. May God bless you during these days of Christmas! The Catholic.Store Team |
