The ruling: A federal judge in D.C. decided last week that the former president is not immune from being criminally charged for his efforts to undo the outcome of the 2020 election.
Why it matters: How courts handle the appeal, filed yesterday, may decide whether Trump, who is running for president again, goes on trial before the 2024 election, or ever.

Hunter Biden was charged with federal tax evasion in California yesterday.

The case: President Biden's son is accused of failing to pay at least $1.4 million in federal taxes from foreign business deals from 2016 through 2019. He faces nine counts.
What it means: It's his second indictment, following gun charges in Delaware in September. He could go on trial twice next year while his father runs for reelection.

What to know: Secretary of State Antony Blinken made the comments yesterday as the death toll in Gaza climbed to more than 17,000 people, according to Palestinian authorities.
On the ground: Israeli soldiers rounded up dozens of Palestinian men and stripped them down to their underwear, according to a video apparently filmed in Gaza yesterday.

The UNLV gunman was a professor who had repeatedly applied for a job.

Who was he? Anthony Polito, 67, had sought a position at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas, where he killed three faculty members Wednesday before being killed by police.
Before the attack: Polito mailed 22 letters to university personnel across the country. One has been retrieved and contained an unknown white powder, police said.

A strong storm will hit the central U.S. and East Coast this weekend.

What to know: A system is forming east of the Rockies. It will barge across the central and eastern U.S., bringing heavy rain, strong winds and snow into Monday.
Be prepared: Flight disruptions are possible, particularly late Sunday into early Monday in the Northeast. A gentler weather pattern should arrive next week.

How? India and Thailand have had an unusual dry spell, intensified by the El Niño weather pattern and human-caused climate change. It has weakened this season's harvest.
The impact: Retail prices for sugar and sweets are set to increase by 8.9% this year and 5.6% in 2024. Coffee and olive oil prices have also risen this year because of drought.
